koi prefers feeding on the bottom Can't Post

hi,

I have a 2 year old female kohaku that does not come up for floating pellets. it just stays down at the bottom feeding on the algae.

no sign of swim bladder problem, no sign of losing volume, swims normally with the group. water parameter all ok.

have any of you encountered a koi behaving like this? do you think there is an internal problem?

Lar

I tried sinking pellets and she gobbled it all up. guess she is a bottom feeder

Koi are usually friendly and easy to tame, but some are more cautious than others and do not like to come to the surface. Most will eventually, if you give them enough time.

Something may have spooked her while you were not there and now she is afraid to come up. We had that problem last year after a Red Tailed Hawk took several of our Koi. Most of them would not come up willingly for a long time. If your water is good and there are no signs of health problems it is probably OK.
One other possibility is that your ph may have dropped a little bit below what she is used to. Some fish are more sensitive to minor water issues than others, and acidic water will cause Koi to go to the bottom of the pond. What does your ph run?

hi larz,
ph is at 7.5 constant. my pond is totally covered (no problem with ph fluctuations due to rain) and gets 3 hour afternoon sun.

guess what, after the sinking pellets, she is attempting to eat floating. the big kois kinda intimidate her.

yeah, I know what you mean. there are some stray cats in the area.

It sounds like the problem may be working itself out. She just needed to be thoroughly temptedWink
Your ph is great, so that definitely isn't it. Sometimes size differences change a Koi's personality. They do tend to have a social order, with the bigger being the leaders and the smaller ones having their own little group. In the end, everyone eventually adjusts.
