pot-bellied koi Can't Post

Hello,

10 days ago, I started feeding my 20 koi (roughly 6 kg total weight)
4 x each day (8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm) with 40% protein pellets totalling 160 gm per day.

I notice some of them were starting to develop a pot belly. Am I feeding too much or is the food too high in protein?

Dear tangigi3

It all depends on the size of your pond. Koi need deep water to swim and exercise in. And alot depends on your filter system also. As more food meens more waiste and your water quality could be hit.

What kind of pellet are you using ? Are you using trout pellets ? If you are try feeding brown bread with them and spray on some koi vits, to add carbohydrates and extra vitamins. As trout pellets are not good for koi in the long run.

If your fish are eating all the food you give them within a few minutes it should be ok. But keep an eye on your water quality.

Hi zoul,

My pond is 7,500 gallons and 5 feet deep. plenty of room for 20 kois. water quality is ver good.

I am feeding them fish based 40 % protien aquaculture feed from belgium, which I bought from a prominent koi breeder here.

They do finish the food quickly and still looking for more.

well, I did forget that there are some kois that are not genetically sexy as they grow

hi zoul,

they are too young to have eggs, approx 8 to 10 inch, bought them when they were 5 inches 6 months ago. I dont really like kois that is shaped like tadpoles. I like their pattern but the body shape is more impt to me.

Its ok, new fish makes my mom happy.

Hi Zoul,

What does propolis do to the kois? is it in cream or powder form? I read somewhere that its good as a rub-on to cure hikui? If its to be added to the diet, do you know in what dosage? Who sells this stuff?

Thanks
Koi-kaki

Dear koi-kaki

Propolis comes in several forms, It's made by bees on the inside of hives. Best to go for the liquid stuff as the losengers and powder stuff is useless to koi.

Propolis is a natural antiseptic with natural antibiotic properties. Its also quite expensive, but you can get it from most health food shops.

When you weigh food for koi add half a tea spoon for every handfull of food( depending on how big your hands are)
Or just enough to give the food a light coating. If your fish have open wounds from physical damage or the after math of parasites bacterial or fungal infections or any damage ect you can use it to cover this area.

Both internal and exteral bacterial problems ect are heald rapidly with this.

And it also helps the digestion and makes fish quite hungry.

Hope this helps.

Thanks zoul. Would honey then be good for kois? For sure it will not be as therapeutic as propolis.
Btw, I asked a question on basically pond maintenance on another thread in this forum, would be great to have your opinion too.
Cheers.

Dear Koi-kaki

If you dip your fingers in honey then stick some food to them mixed with garlic your koi will become hand tame in not time at all.

I would feed honey by itself though.
