showa's sumi disappeared - food related ? Can't Post

hi i am newbie in koi keeping. bought a 10cm showa from summer koi in early Apr. feed with normal pellets . to my surprise, the sumi (black) on the fish disappeared till very pale abt 1-2 weeks later.

is it due to food that is not good enough or the quality of the fish itself ( bought at $50 only) that the sumi got disappeared ?. also will the sumi come back if given koi food ? thks

Hi forever,

There are many reasons for fading sumi, not least of which is water condition, temperature, illness and koi quality issues. Do you have before and after pix of the showa?

Well, i would say its most likely not caused by the food. Like GC said, my guess is the water condition, check the before and after pH and nitrite. pH crash (swing from high to low) can surely caused dissapearing sumi coz i experienced this with my sanke altho all kois with sumi is affected. Now, from what i heard, sumi (black) can come back, while hi (red) once its gone, its gone. Dunno whether this is true or not ??

Hi forever,

Since there are multiple kois affected, we can safely assume that the problem was systemic rather than limited to any individual koi.

The fundamental thing to remember is that one of the first things koi will lose is their colour when they kicked into survival mode. If this is the case, you have to find out what the cause that is stressing the koi. They are a number of things to check

- PH
As mentioned by Koi 888, a pH crashed would be the first thing to consider
- Chlorine
Were your tap water sufficiently declorinated (for chlorine and Chloramine)?
- Contaminants
Did things like detergent, fertiliser, Cu etc get into the tank?
- temperature
Excessive high temperature could be a factor
- Light and noise
Is your tank indoor? Insufficient light will affect hi and watching Bo Bice (what a fantastic performance!) and TV stuff may contribute to continual stress
- Overcrowded
Self explanatory

Hopefully, you can identify the source of the problem first.

cheers..
