too much fruits & veggies ? Can't Post

Hi

I have been feeding my koi a lot of fruits and vegetables this summer. Can you feed them too much of it ? Am I making my fish less healthy by feeding so much of it ?

Each dayI will toss out some chuncks of oranges and tomatoes. They love grapes and watermellon so have been giving them a lot of those as well. Heck they are even getting boiled potatoes once a week. They aren't eatting near as much of their reg pellets. Mad. I want healthy as well as happy fish.

Can koi digest grapes with seeds in them ? So far I haven't fed them anything with seeds in it for fear it will hurt their bellies.

Thanks
Keith

Hi, fruits and veg are ok if given in moderate amounts. I don't think seeds are digested. They'll be passed out together with the feces. Overfeeding of anything will cause alot of undigested food to appear in the feces. This messes up the water and will lead to decomposition and increase in the number of harmful bacteria. Weaker koi will contract mouth rot and ulcers under such conditions. Morever, too much veg and fruits will cause the koi to eat less protein rich pellets necessary for growth. Smile
Always friendly :)
