Hi David,
I'm glad that you have an interest in providing good living conditions for your kois.
You questions are very general. You need to have a good basic knowledge of water filtration, the conponents of a water filter, water parameters, etc.
Please go under 'Pond cosntruction & water filter' and 'pond water quality' and read those threads there so you can build up your knowledge. 'Koi feeding, nutrition and diet' is definately not the place to discuss that topic  .
By keeping the water 'clean', you need to have as little dissolved organic content(DOC), little solid faeces, and less contaminants to the kois(ammonia, nitrite, etc) and so many more. What's more important is giving your kois a healthy environment so they can grow and bloom! hehe.
