yum yum for frys? Can't Post

Hey guys,

Well my dad and I are learning along the ways of this koi raising. We have around...eer. I'd say 200-300 hatched? It's been around 2 days since they have and we were wondering what they need to eat.

We have plenty of good green stuff in there, some crumpled at the bottom and the water hyacinths.

We have so far:
Powdered goldfish flakes
Frozen Brine Shrimp.

good enough?

Also i heard about this liquid stuff, but what is it and where can you get it?

Thanks!
Chelsea.

P.S. I heard about how u have to take out rottin unfertilized eggs, but there are soo many and I don't want to suck up the babies. What's the best way to remove them? They're solid white...right?

Chelsea...

The liquid food out in the market are usually liquid egg yolk solutions....heard like a few drops per feeding or something..Smile You could get them at most koi shops..

And yes you do talk out the white unfertilized eggs....I would try to carefully net out fry with a culling pan into a different tank and then get rid of the rotting eggs...

Really hope this helps...Tongue

well we fed them a lil' today and they eat some. How much should I be feeding these guys? they're in a 40-50 gallon rubber maid with a air"bar". I put like 2 pinches of goldfish food powder in it, not sure if that's enough.

culling pan? what's that look like? Is that just like those silver pie pans that I could put them in, then take the water hyancinths out? (most of the white eggs are attached to that)

Chelsea...

Here are also some koi fry foods you can feed them:

- Liquifry comes in a bottle, and in two versions, Livebearer and Egglayer. Of course, with goldies we wonna go with the egglayer food. Just be careful not to add too much in the fry tank all at once, otherwise you are gonna get a mess.

- Eggyolk You can use the eggyolk of a hardboiled egg, crumble it in tiny winy pieces, add a few drops of water, mix it and off you go.....Same warning as with theliquifry - not too much, otherwise its a mess.

- Microworms are falling under the category of better quality fry food, and once obtained you can re-cultivate it over and over again. there are some from http://aquaticeco.com. All they need is a container oatmeal, mix it to a mixture with water, add yeast and the worm culture, and in a couple of days you see the tiny little things marching up the sides ofyour container. One swipe with a spoon or the finger, and you have 100s of the worms to worms to feed to your babies. I found those worms the best to catch, even for the weaker fry, since the worms are very slow moving, not like freshly hatched brine shrimp.

- Freshly hatched brine shrimp are another high quality food source for the fry. Eggs and salt are easily obtained in any petstore, just mix them togethr via instructions on the package, airstone in it, and done....Starsmom even tried it without airstone, and it worked just fine

- Hikari First Bites provide complete and balanced nutrition for all the important development stages of your fry's life. They also promote proper feeding habits, long term health, and superior disease resistance, allowing your fry to grow rapidly without fear of dietary deficiencies. Slow sinking granules are great for all the newborn fish..(taken from the HIkari website). A few members have had great success with this food as well....

I only know the amount in feeding liquified foods.....you feed a drop of liquid food for about every 6 fry...so if you have about 400 of them....you will need approximately 66 drops all at onceCrazy

For powder....I guess something like half a drop size of powder for every 6 fry.

If you fry are doing ok with 2 pinches....then go ahead with it.....ifyou find the need to increase the food then do so..Smile

Chelsea...

No problem....nothing beter than to help others...Smile

Yeah constipation is not really a nice thing to have.....><

Well, I think the flakes are not really suited for young fry......

I think powder and liquid works better.....however the liquid could mess up the water...Crazy

When I hard few days old fry...I fed them with newly hatched Baby Brine Shrimp...they love to crunch and chase them around. I found it being one of the best foods for them. I feed them every 3hrs, they grow so fast.

Once atleast 2-3weeks old...I started to feed a mixture of frozen BBS with the live ones. They also accepted fine crush foods. I have heard that live water fleas are good for them as well. But they must be atleast a few weeks old as they can be quite big.

Goodluck

Few days old???

Oh, well then I'm going to go and set up the brine shrimp "hatchery" now.

My dad took me to Petsmart and I found a hatchery thing that came with 3 packs of brine shrimp eggs, then bought an extra 3 packs. Laugh

Yay!

Re: [xXKoiQueenXx] yum yum for frys? [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear KoiQueen

It's not the size of flake food that gives them constipation....it's the fact that they are babys... You would'nt feed a human baby under 6 months steak and fries would you ??? becouse their little stomaches just can't digest it.

Even though they may eat it you will find it can course prolapsing and even a hernia.

If you see fish with long string like poo hanging from the vent it's a sighn of bad diet and constipation.

Constipation in fish can lead to deathPirate
And noone whants that....

Re: [Forever-Mango] yum yum for frys? [In reply to] Can't Post

so I can just put the mix into a bottle with an airstone (or w/out since a poster above said another person used it and it worked) and I don't have to use the little hatchery?

I'll probably do that then :]

Re: [xXKoiQueenXx] yum yum for frys? [In reply to] Can't Post

The hatchery container can be anything usually. Some people use massive fish tanks for it, but i usually have a fish tank then lots of bottles in the tank, i also heat the water in the tank to heat the bottle etc in the winter to ensure 99.99% hatch rate in the next 24hrs so I can feed my fry most of the time.

Usually people purchase hatcheries from the LFS because they are more presentable that coke bottles. I use it in my room, so no one can see what im doing inside. But if it was in the lounge room, then I will use something more presentable.

Cheers

I'm not sure if you buy those sally's brine shrimp packet things, but that's what I'm using...how much of the little packets should they be going through?

Also they hatchery container has some sort of tube that the shrimp swim up into, so it keeps the salt water from mixing with your pond water...with a coke bottle don't you end up putting empty brine shrimp eggs and salt water into the fry pond?

Or does it not affect them.
