I actually bought two koi which were classified as 'butterfly' koi before I knew that the fins would grow so outlandishly long. Fortunately my koi's fins didn't grow as long as the traditional butterfly koi either because they were a cheap type or because they were classified wrong. I am very glad their fins didn't get as long as some of the pictures I see of butterfly koi. It just doesn't seem natural for a fish to have fins that long.
They must have difficulty swimming and I can imagine they get damaged easily. Just doesn't seem good for the fish.
