jumbo koi Can't Post

I would love to have a pond full of jumbo 36" koi. I have none this large Frown. I don't expect mine to reach this size.
What is the size of your largest koi? Also it's age and your pond size. A picture would be great.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours Crazy,
Jaylene

Re: [Jaylene] jumbo koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jaylene,

For a koi to reach jumbo status, it'll need the genes, good food and ideal environment (pond of considerable depth and size). Even with these prerequisites, it usually takes kois of such calibre at least 5 years of age to reach 32" (or 80cm) and you would have done a very good job if you can get them to reach jumbo size.

Gosankes rarely hit the 36" (90cm) mark, and it is not easy to find one even in reputable breeders' parent stocks. You'll have better chances of reaching 36" with kois like chagoi, benigoi, ogon, kigoi etc.

Getting kois to reach 70cm is relatively easy (I've had 3 tosais from 20cm+ which hit the 70cm mark in 2-2.5 years). However, it is from 70cm that their growth is painstakingly slow (probably due to the size of my pond... only 12 tons including filter Frown).

Cheers,
Dennis

Hello Pieter,

Thank you for all the great pictures Sly. You certainly have some good sized koi, and a nice variety of colors . What kind of filter are you using? If you have pond pics plz post.

Regards,
Jaylene

Thanks everyone!

Hi Jaylene,
Photos’ of the pond are posted under Members Ponds “My first pond “

Filter system on 40000lt pond:
2 x 1,1kw pumps (turn over 48 000lt per hour)
2 x 5 bag Sand filters (containing 3-5mm sand)
2 x 3 bag Sand filters (containing 1-1,5mm sand)
2 x 100 lt trickle bio-filters (containing bio-blocks)
2 x 50lt trickle bio-filters (containing oyster shells)
2 x 55 watt uv-lights

4 x bottom drains
2 x skimmers
4 x mid-depth aim flows
2 x top aim flows (with venturies in winter)
1 x water fall (2m high)
1 x overflow filter with bags of oyster shells

The sand filters are backwashed every second day and turn over by hand every month
when 500g salt is added to each one and left for 2 hours before being backwashed.

Trickle filters are cleaned once per year
