new pond Can't Post

hi all
thankyou all for your advice about our pond.as promised we have given our koi a bigger home to thrive in,from 2300liters to 8500liters still not huge but space dictated this.i am attempting to make my own filter with 1000liter water tank ,water is being pumped through the top gravity through matting ,then through expanded clay then through pvc cuttings then back to pond.reason being i am not happy with existing filters that i am cleaning 2-3 times a week .any thoughts????

Put a settlement tank before this filter.

You can do this by having the settlement tank situated just a slightly bit higher than the current filter so do you can have a output pipe from the settlement tank to feed the second filter.

In the settlement tank you can install reticulated foam, japanese or matala type matting.

You can consider pumping the water from the top down to the bottom and allowing the water to rise past the matting through to the output pipe to the second filter. Install a drain device on the bottom of this settlement tank to flush regularly :)

Hi Koiguyoz
Thanks for your reply to my question,at pesent I have a fine mesh bag attached to the supply to the filter as I am running out of room for a setling area, this seems to be catching most of the larger sediment i will have to run with this idea until i can figure out a better idea.I realise that the bag will need cleaning very often but the bag is quicker than the cleaning of the old filters.all the best
Peter
