FILTER UPGRADE.. COMMENT WELCOME Can't Post

hi all cifus..

just upgrade my filter system.. old system used a dry sump for bottom drain water remove to drain.. new system i connect my pond bottom drain to the dry sump, making the dry sump as pre filter to supply water to my BH.. heres some pictures to share.. comment welcome.. btw, the initial idea come from master cifu koi38..Wink

4 white pipe is filter bottom drain, 2 grey pipe is bottom drain from mani pond.
1 white pipe on the bottom left of pictures is over flow pipe.

the grey pipe top left is feed to pump..
4 filter bottom drain pipe remains..
the new 4 in white pipe is to stop water from flow to drain..
2 4in grey pipe for from pond BD was removed..
bottom left picture show my new over flow pipe connect to drain..

closer picture to show my overflow pipe from pond to waste..

cheers..

Cifu,
Maybe you sketch out a simple layout from old to new would be easier to understand.Crazy But I know what you are doing.Sly

THIS IS MY OLD SYSTEM...

THIS IS THE NEW SYSTEM..
except the 'new transfer pipe' was not used, instead a pump is used to transfer water to BH..

Kit,
Idea is pond to settlement tank, then to BH. Your kois have proved the system works really good. LaughThe beauty of koi has started to shine! CoolTongue What's the nitrate and nitrite right now? Are they improving low and insignificant?? Your daily data will shows its efficiency compare to your old system.

Bravo! the next level up!! LaughLaughWinkTongue

notice the 1st picture the colour of the bubbles are clearer than those of picture 2 (before BH feed from BD)
picture 2 shows more greenish ... any comment on the colour of picture 1? blue may be?Wink

perhaps picture 3 is a better comparison with picture 2.. pond floor also less brown film algae...

btw nitrate level drop from 100ppm to 20ppm... in just 1 week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kit,
I can remember your water is clearer but didnt see the oxygen colour.Crazy Anyway, the important thing is the quality of skin has improved a lot compare to 1 week ago when I visited you. I am surprise your nitrate is high but now is fairly low. I would aim for less than 5ppm but it is hard. I can only maintain 15ppm with my heavy feeding in the weekend. UnsureCrazy. Guess have to plant some friendly green plant without clogging and some more experiments to bring the water parameter to the optimum.Tongue Too many parameters to play with and it is fun!Wink

Re: [koi@kit] FILTER UPGRADE.. COMMENT WELCOME [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Sifu Kit,

You have done a very neat up-grading job to your filter chambers. From your photos and diagrams posted, if I may high-light to you the following questions:-

1) I think the 4 nos. of white pipes from the existing chamber should be cut about 6 inches
lower so that water from that chamber can flow into the new chamber created. It seem
to me that the mid-water flowing into the existing chamber is close off at the moment.
Am I right or wrong?

2) What diameter size of pipe did you used from the pump to your Bakki Shower? From the
photos, I think the pipe used is too small. You should provide a bigger diameter pipe so
that vast amount of water can be pump up to the Bakki Shower trays to create a shower
effect on the Bacteria House media inorder to be effective unlike Trickle Tower Shower
requirements.

3) Since you do not have a bottom drain discharge outlet connected from the new chamber
to any external drain. I think in this case, you will need to install a surface dry pump
connected with a rubber hose to symphon out all the dirts which will eventually be
collected at the base of both the settlement chambers occasionally. If not, the dirts
build up over a period of time & which are not clear away will eventually lead to water
problems in your pond.

Best Regards,
ThiamHwa

the mid water feed is still flowing, sorry the diagram not clear.
u r rite, i shud remove the 4 pipe feeding the bottom drain of izeki filter, then my other
filter will have cleaner bottom.. maintanant only at the new pre filter.. tks.Wink

2) What diameter size of pipe did you used from the pump to your Bakki Shower? From the

at this moment the pipe i used is inlet to pump is 2in, oulet is slightly smaller 1 3/4 ins..
since my water pump is only 0.5hp bigger pipe will reduce pressure.. will show u more pictures..

3) Since you do not have a bottom drain discharge outlet connected from the new chamber
to any external drain. I think in this case, you will need to install a surface dry pump
connected with a rubber hose to symphon out all the dirts which will eventually be

problems in your pond.

yes u r rite, but i clear my pre filter every 3 days.. strangely not soo much waste, so i guess i have
to clear off the pre filter once a week..

many thanks thiamhwa for ur advice and suggestion..

btw i also planted some 'kunyam' bamboo hope to reduce nitrate further... u must have seen it near my BH rite?

remember my quaratin pond? the one i only use lava rock as TT? the nitrate is shocking less than 10ppm...

Kit,
With some inspiration, I figure out a lazy way to do it on Lava rock TT. Laugh High oxygen, high surface area, high water/lava rock contact area and very low pump power. Wink will try it out and let you know the result!Laugh

Hi Kit,

Just one more suggestion for your up-graded filter. You may want to consider placing an up-right elbow to the in coming mid-water into
your existing settlement chamber and have a 6 inches raised up perforated plastic grating layer at the base for placing additional BH media.
The BH will be then used as submerged BH filter media which is similar to Vincent's 150 pond system in Kepong Koi.
Just a thought.

ThiamHwa

Hi thiamhwa..

yes i got that in mine, tks for reminding me.. my pre filter's elbow too high, so i can make my submerge BH in prefilter. so i gonna make one at the second chamber.. exactly wat u have said earlier, 6in above ground with grating layer.. will take picture n show u all when it finally done.. now planning to get a new air pump to supply areation to the submerge BH..

hi sinshine..

dont talk and suspend all of us here lah... a simple drawing to show ur new finding will be better lah..Tongue

cheers guys..

Hi Kit,

I can see the diff in water clarityCool Pic one shows water is much clearer than pic 2 with a bit of green tint, good job man...................very well done. Can't wait your reports once you got all the 140kg of BHWink

Just a question about your moving bed not to critic but I've noticed you're using bioballs instead of K1 media or similar. From my understanding of moving bed filters, media are constantly moving by air thus improve good bacteria colonization. Are those balls moving at all? If so I gues you can call it oneCrazyTongue I could be wrongPirate

Hi Kit,

Maybe if you can reduce the amount of bioballs in the drum they move moreCrazyTongue

If I have lava rocks and bio balls I would use them in TT application. That is best way I can think of for nowWink

But if you want to auction them I'm 100% behind you.....more money for BHLaughLaughLaugh
