Hello bruneians.. (sorry for long post) Can't Post

hi, im eddie. im a new member here from seria. slowly getting to pond keeping since sept 06, but an active aquarium hobbiest since im 16. im turning 27 this year. im introduce to this site thru koiphen.com. Actually im trying to get info & contacts as i want to rebuild my dad's current landscape pond. i had it repair & upgraded from about 1000 litres to about 1300 litres. its an ovel shape pond about 8 feet x 6 feet x 1 feet deep. and now house 7 koi's, 5 shunbunkins & 5 comets. i got sound knowledge on filter setup, fish keeping & maintaining water conditions. About My pond it's crystal clear, water parameters & conditions are great now after much of gathering info in the web. its running around 3-4mths now without any problem. Actually, i added 3 gold scale koi in 14 Mar 07 & then add 4 tricolor koi's on 30 Mar 07. (i was just trying to test my filter, whether it can cope with the extra load, nothing happen so far.. knock wood!!)

my questions are, you guys know any experience pond builders in brunei or contractors? im trying to budget out a 14 feet x 12 feet x 4 feet deep rectangle pond (2.5 feet under ground & 1.5 feet above ground, above ground for safety-acting like a fence to prevent faling.) i have got the sketch ready. i'll post it up when i convert it to electronic form & pls comment on any modfications or other parts that i overlook. im also trying to find a few stuff like surface skimmer, bottom drains, aeration jets, proper automatic waterfill units (im currently using the water float for toilet) & underwater lighting. the other stuff like filter media, pumps i know where to get those. Also do you guys seal your cement pond wif paint/sealent? Other members outside (in the US) warned about cement lime leaching out and upset the pond pH and stuffs. Actually i brought 1 from Petlink call Cement waterproofer & cement sealant when repairing my dad's pond. but the price is a bit too much. So too any of you guys, i read the brunei forum and i can see experience fish keeper so maybe you got info on this. Thnks.

here's what im keeping.
3 Ryukins in 150 litres aqua.
2 Redcap Oranda & 2 Common Goldfish in 50 litres aqua.
1 Black Moor & tons of guppies in 250 litres outdoor pond.
1 tiger oscar & 1 Red Oscar in 200 litres aqua.
7 koi's, 5 shubunkins, 5 comets & tons of guppies in 1300 litres outdoor pond.
1 4foot2inches Albino Cornsnake.
2 months supply of mice. (mainly breeding them for snake food)

Here are links to some of my pets. (Video & Pictures)

Hi Eddie..

welcome to brunei forum.. i m from tutong. 1st of all.. wat is dat u want? u want to keep koi or just landscape??
i m asking u this question coz in Brunei there r 2 type of keeper.

1.koi keeper. which keep really good koi in just rectangular pond with good dept. maintain good water n feeding their koi
wit high quality food.

2. pond keeper. they keep koi 'biasa' but they have moderate water quality n feeding standard koi food. usually they just
want clear water wit sound of waterfall at their garden.

both keeper r welcome to join our membership. we do pond visits, give advice on how to keep kois.

as for pond maker, i cant comment much, i can help wit ur filter system, but u have to tell me r u a koi keeper or pond keeper..Smile

Hello, koi@kit & Robert Lee.

Yeah, im more to the pond keeper type. (keep koi biasa, and love the sound of waterfall in my garden & love the clear water.) Humm, no info on the pond maker eh. i want to trust the indons that make ppl landscape/pond but after talking to the forums from abroad. i have much info that i cant just let them do the pond without my supervision. dont want a crack 20,000 litres ponds eh.. At the moment, i dont have any issues on water problems & my pond filter seems to be working perfectly. But, if you have an info that i could benefit, i'll be glad to listen.

Robert Lee, i would love to visit people ponds, as i can increase my knowledge on pond keeping/koi keeping. so where do i sign-up?

Thanks again..

hi eddie..

check out the following post regarding pond in brunei. was built by fellow indonesian.

http://www.koi.com.my/cgi-bin/koiforum/gforum.cgi?post=93840;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread

for ur info as long as they know how to 'campur' cement and plaster them, i dont think its a problem. as for the bottom drain and pipeping, ur better learn n see more b4 u actually make a pond..

in ur case u r only a pond keeper. u need a bottom drain to transport water to a settlement aka pump chamber then trickle tower. u can put UV light in ur pump chamber to prevent water turn green since u r a pond keeper. a koi keeper dont mind their water turn green coz green water is great for koi. as for trickle tower u can either use good material like bacteria house (then u call bakki shower) which is more expensive than using bio ball or jap matting (which r far more cheaper)..

BUT in long run, from my experience, a pond keeper will bcome a koi keeper, so make sure u dont mistake from the start, if u do make mistake, ur hobby will go down the drain..Pirate

not to worry, the brunei forum is full of cifu which will help sincerely..Smile

Hi eddie244,

Welcome to the forum. GOod to know that the hobby is prospering. As for your Q's, there are plenty of good pond builders around, provided you know their background. (try getting more information from fellow hobbyist on how well their ponds are set-up by their contractors.) With this information you can always sidestep any future problems by identifying the problems in advance.

When planning to build a pond, always, always, always prepare for the worst case scenario imaginable for your fishes and have a backup plan to counter the problem that may arise. Theres this saying in the Nishikigoi world " When building a pond, always get it rite the 1st time". Which is very true. As mentioned by koi@kit, you have to know what you want 1st, are you just in for the asthetics of a pond or can there be a possibility that you'll convert into a koi addict, like most have experienced.Sly

In any case, from teh measuremens of your proposed pond, i'd advise that you increase the depth further to about 5-6 feet, just incase one day you may convert.

Asfor the equipment supplies, bottom drain, surface skimmers, aeration jets, all these can be DIY-ed. Just drop into the pond construction thread and you'll learn alot.

In terms of pond sealant, yeah, some of us DO do it. It may cost expensive but it's well worth the investment.

regards

Re: [koi@kit] Hello bruneians.. (sorry for long post) [In reply to] Can't Post

koi@kit: thanks. Great looking landscape, you know which contractor build that? TQ. yeah, i have all those details covered (bottom drain, settlement chamber, then the filteration) the TTF (Trickle Tower Filter) for me is just like a wet/dry filteration. i even go the extra mile, calculation pipe size, flow rate just to squeeze the correct amperage for the 24/7 running pump which result in lower electrical bill. But since i dont have any problems wif my pond, im gonna stick with my DIY filter design. by the way, im not gonna build the pond myself, maybe helping cangkul sikit2 lah but the initial pipe laying will be done by me, then i'll hire the contractors, and ask them to build the pond to my specific detail. So, any of you guys who convert from PK(pond keeper) to KK (koi keeper)?

kemeer : im trying to achieve just that. i want to do it right, the 1st time. as to drop a few couple of feet, i think, i have stretch out of space. (maximum i think i can dig is 3 feet. that's why i have the pond raised 1.5 feet so total 4+ feet). is there any laws of digging? or should i need to ask the proper authority and apply for permits/approvals? about the pool sealant, can i have more info. "do i right, the 1st time" Cool

Robert Lee : will do.. Wink im actually scared of jumbo koi's. Once at ogdc, (have u seen the big boys.. 4-5 feet long) me & some frens came down into the pond. his car keys fell down (we ask the security 1st), and the koi's came and suck-suck-suck our bodies maybe they are hungry. phobia eh...

sunshinekoi : there you go.. pm waiting.

Here's my Crystal Clear Pond, 100% sunlight, No cover, No UV, No chemicals. and all the happy 7 koi, 5 goldfish & 5 shubunkins inside.

Eddie,
My suggestion would be paying a few visit to different koi pond prior to start your project. This way you will benefit a lot! Who knows, better idea for your landscape! Wink

well, the more help the better. im gonna give my current pond to live until next year probably until Mar-April 2008 (targeting the dry seasonSmile).

History of my dad's pond. it was dead for 2-3years i think. water very very green, cant see the bottom even the pond was only 12inch. filter setup, no need to mention la. (no filter) i was still schooling during those time & most $$ allowance was use to take care of my other goldfish inside the house. Now, im working and got that xtra $. so after gathering info on pond maintenance, filter set-up etc etc. i started to make this pond alive in sept-oct 06 (puasa time) and completed just in time for Raya (2months +, repairing the pond by myself!! + fasting). After all that, im very happy with the outcome. Pond now, running since Oct 06 until now April 07. (7mths, not bad in my view Wink)

Yup, im joining the pond visit this april. Be gentle wif me, ya all ah... Shocked
