Koidamit,
If you want to have a great colour on your koi and a good diet against infection, you can try Hikari.
Feeding those food will really grow your fish and the colour too.

Koidamit,
It depends what you want. If you want to the fish to growth faster and healthier, one of the hikari category is good that promote growth and health. you can also change the diet altenatively. maybe three days for natural growth and health, maybe another 3 days feed another catergory with pellets that has spirualina and vitamin C. growing can be fast but the fish tank or pond can get very dirty easily.
To really see the effect, you can concentrate feeding one type for a month and if it is for healthy natural growth, you will see it grow big. The other brand I can recommend is Azoo brand. This is 9 in one type of food. The koi will like it very much but expensive. You can get it in jalan Tutong where previously volk wagen show room is.
This will all dependant on your budget. I personally give Azoo pellets which I have more confident on. You have to be ready to burn your cash.
There are some medium range type of pellets which may only promote health growth and you can try out.
If you have pure japanses koi, I would suggest you to buy good food for your koi. They are damn expensive koi and for sure you want them to grow to a fulll size.
hope this help

Koidamit,
for small koi, you cant tell much difference and they are almost the same. If it is more than 10inches, the quality will show up a lot. Pattern of the body is very different. You cannot find much comparison in Brunei. when you have a chance to go singapore, malaysia or japan, you can compare them. it is a bit difficult to judge it at full course if there isnt much happening in Brunei.
These are all by experience and there isnt any text book to help yet.

i also keep arowana, i know kalau arowana we tend to let them grow slow, so that they r beautiful since damit lagi.. kalau grow too fast colournya enda keluar. is this your concept of keeping koi? baik ur koi atu enda kurus macam arowana??Cool

Koidamit,
This is my opinion which I dont see enough quality koi around unless somebody can tell me where.
Growing fast or slow is not an issue. The concern is make sure you can keep up with the water quality they live in. You cannot be there all the time to watch and test water. A balance health diet is required for Koi just like human who eat 3 times a day. what happened when you eat too much and growing too fat. It will be the same to fish as well. This all depends on what you want.

Koidamit,
check it when the temperature is warm. If you can smell it, see how bad? Then check the water quality in term of PH and nitrate. If your tank is exposed to higher temperature, there will be more potential to parasite. Hence once a month, there must be some maintenance on the water such as adding preventive solution against disease. If you have rainy season or the tap water is just not great in term of smell or colour. You have to really decide whether to change or leave it till better water is observed. If you dont have much water to change, you can get a big drum which preferably come with controlled outlet below. Have the tap water run into the drum and fill it up. Leave it for 3 days which normally one day is good but I normally allow for 3 days. Drain off 30% of the very bottom of the water. Add disinfection solution and salts to it and stir thoroughly. Then start to drain off your tank whichever your amount of the water to be changed apply. This will cut your potential disease to minimum. Keep an eye on your fish for a day and that will do the job.
