hi koi@kit,

now that u mention it perhaps now it makes sense to me as well. i have tried testing my tap water with the normal commercial ammonia tester that u can get at pet shop here and was surprised to see the result showing presence of ammonia in it..so i wonder if the test was accurate...since then i stop testing my pond water thinking that the tester is unreliable...hehe...so now i guess i have my answer...thanx kit for the info...

hmmm so if there is ammonia n nitrate in the tap water..n topping my pond wif tap water as well..i am basically putting in more ammonia n nitrate in my pond... s**t now im worried hehe... so the only way is to treat the tap water but how...that i hope u can help me koi@kit...hehe..i hope u dont mind helping me with this issue since u got me worried hehe...

cheers...

well kapok koi..

the ways to reduce ammonia , nitrite and nitrate include :-
1. zeolite (but make sure no salt in water)
2. use trickle tower (u must have a massive one, tall tower)
3. use vegetable filter (also must use massive plants, plants root can harbour parasite thou)
4. massive Bacteria hse.. (more $ will b spent)
5. use onitaiji everyday (another massive $ spent)

my point is even with massive water change will not help reduce ammonia or nitrate.. may b someone can come up with a brilliant ideas the best we can do..

rainwater here also contain quiet high in phosphate (another fertilizer for algae)..

PiratePrimär is a POE water filter that was developed after stringent R&D on Malaysian water conditions to formulate the right mix of filter media, in the right quantity, with the right configurations to provide optimum filtration for safe water.

Its filter media is a composition of :
1) A bed of finely graded Silica Sand media – to effectively filter particles like sand, toxic compounds, organic contaminants and such down to 10 microns. (that’s 1/10th the size of a strand of hair!)

2) A layer of top grade micro and macropore activated carbon to reduce the chlorine level to a safer level, and remove up to 99.99% of other toxic contaminants.

Vessel
1) Single layer Fibre-Glass Reinforced Polyester (FRP), imported from the USA tested & proven to withstand hot & wet Malaysian climate.

2) A pressure vessel, tested to be safe under high water pressure, complies with the American Standards in Mechanical Engineering (ASME).

3) Certified Food Grade quality from the National Sanitary Foundation (NSF). USA - will not teach toxic substances of fumes over time.

Valve
1) Automatic valves allows the self-cleaning process to be conducted daily.

2) Made from lead-free brass – will not corrode or break over time

Other than its material and make, HydroGuard’s most impressive feature is its ability to provide a strong backwash velocity – to ensure the self-cleaning process is powerful and thorough. Backwashing is the most essential aspect of any filtration system with media content.

So far i have been using this product for my home and my water seems to be fine, maybe this could be one of the solution but then again as cifu kit has said
(more $$$ spend) which is true no doubt.....CrazyUnsurePirate.

Again its up to the member if they want to invest on this product or not, i'm not saying that this is the solution but it can reduce the problem.... We have this product in brunei. When i purchase this product i'm using their monthly instalment plan as we bruneian would say "PLAN ANSURAN UNTUK MENGURANGKAN BEBAN ABISKITA" hahahahhaa......LaughLaughTongue

P/S:Remember sharing information does'nt mean selling the product.Laugh

Kit,
Dont forget your house is very close to the Reservoir. The nitrate is usually high close to the reservoir and as the water distribute to bandar area using pipe line, the nitrate will drop by concentration.

thank you for the info..

Mr presedente sunshine

i guess u r rite abt where i stay and the nitrate.. BUT still cant explain how nitrate can drop its concentration while travelling through the PIPEline.. the copper pipe absorb nitrate? wah like this better use copper pipe for filter system then..Crazy

Hi Kit, Our water supply in Bandar Seri Begawan seems OK to me because I've checked yesterday from my tap water ammonia 0 & Nitrite 0, correct me if I'm Wrong it seems that we in Bandar have water supply from tasik reservour. The water supplies does not come from Tutong. I think this is way our water supply in Bandar Seri Begawan seems OK only very high in chlorine.

Kit,
Dont forget in a dark place, there are also bacteria which is working on the reversing the nitrate back to ammonia and also with a lot of different reservoirs supplying water, the water of all supply tend to mix in concentration and hence lower the nitrate level.

hi sunshine..

wat kind of bacteria doing this?? anaerobic??.... i think wat Hj mohd n u said is correct. bandar water supply come from tasek lama..

strangely, after raining for a few days, i checked the water supply again, the nitrate seems to go down to <12ppm, i guess the river water get diluted..Crazy

but sunshine, i envy u to use ur water supply which is low in tds and all the other contaminant..Unsure

Hi Kit,
It is part of the eco-system. Nitrate will normally goes down when rain comes but also increase contaminant depending on which area is the pond located.

Dont envy lah. Your nitrate level is high at your place and yet you are able to grow big quality koi, so who is envy who?? Tongue

RO water is good but the machine is expensive to maintain. I still think rain water is more within budget. It just takes time to know your rain water at your area very well before you put them into the pond.

what is your opinion?

Re: [sunshinekoi] MAIN WATER ALERT [In reply to] Can't Post

my area rain water pH 6.0.. not good for kois.. RO is better deal for me, after switching to refresh my TDS very high, over 120ppm.. tap water is 85ppm.

need to bring down the tds, RO will surely do the job, wat do u think?

Re: [koi@kit] MAIN WATER ALERT [In reply to] Can't Post

If your intention is to bring down the TDS, RO is the best option. If you dont need to bring it down close to zero, other machine can do the same job too and those machine retain some mineral in the water which is needed by koi. RO water is absolute no mineral. You need to put in mineral yourself. It depends on how much time you want to spend for a day in the pond. By koi food alone, it is not enough to sustain koi health and growth.

If it is worth it for you, why not?
