Wah Cifu, Sooner or later must ask you to DIY for me also.I'm also trying to redesign my filters in my 6ft fish tank to use BH as filter media.Heard its good for arowanas too.
dont laugh at me lah... yes when i went to visit max... he do used BH in submerged filter for his arowana.. unfortunately my BH not arrived yet. so have to use bioballs.. u dont need to DIY using a blue drum lah, u oredi got 'stainless steel'
Question time * What do you have in the drum, BH??? * Did put anything mesh above the inlet outlet pipe??? * Why the inlets facing down, why not have them tilting about 5deg???
This will avoid disturbing the waste that sitting on the bottom.

of course u can incoporate into ur filter... in fact i recommend this type to u rather than make another 'cement' filter... i got the idea from master cifu koi38's DIY Drum Filter.. u can use BH next time in it, n must provide lots of areation..
* Did put anything mesh above the inlet outlet pipe??? yes i put japanese matting..then lava rock, air ring below JM..
thank you very much for ur respond master cifu..
Hi Kit,
If you using this filter as prefilter your set up is excellent. But if you're using this after some filters I suggest to replace the jmatt with some either plastic mesh or stainless steel mesh. The air will push the water up then goes down like a mushroom with tiny waste which will go thru the mesh and settles at the bottom for flashing. The jmatt will trap the waste on the top side and eventually clog it, IMHO

i got those plastic.. but... isnt it rectangular.. my drum is round..
Yoo Kit,
You can cut it with jig saw of just a normal hand saw. Get the size by measuring from the outside minus the thickness of the drum You can use cardboard for pattern. You can also use the lid of the drum

where did u place your bottom drain? bottom of the drum or side? I have mine on the side (lowest possible), but somehow i think its useless, because the waste still stay even i let the water out...what your say?
The bottom of the drum is your best bet Also use larger pipe 2" or 50cm at least If the drain is on the side you have to tilt the drum to drain side which you don't want to do coz it will disturb the bio media inside
