Mechanical Filter Versus Biological flter Can't Post

Wht are the pro's and con's of using eiter type of filter.

I know bioligal filter needs the compartment materials replaced regularly, the sponge, the hard matt, the ceramic ring bacteria house... and i dont know much about biological filter effectiveness againts green water and algae problem...

and i dont know anything about the fundamentals of mechnical filter.

But im thinking of mixing both of them, best of both world u might say...

so any light can be share in the toic it would be great, i think my pod holds around 9000 litres of water...

Im thinking of the water circulation using the mechanical filter would be faster , my basic idea ler...

but anyow i agree with koi@kit, more koi more waste produced, so more filter required...

intrested to hear experience hobbiest views regarding the matter

hi cool_ice59Smile,

Your topic on Biological Filter vs Mechanical Filter is very interesting, and in comparing the effectiveness on both as a standalone filter can be quite difficult.

Biological filter, serves as a system that regulates your water property ie; your ph measurements, nitrate measurements, nitrite, measurements, amonia contents and all those nasty bi-products coming from kois waste "tahi"Laugh and the left over food. A biological filters performance can be measured on how much bacteria it can cultivate in reducing all these things. These bacteria needs alot of space to grow on, and oxygen to survive on in order to be effective. Research the topic of "Nitrogen Cycle" and you will have a rough idea of how filters work. Also check out Bakki Showers and Trickle Towers as they are both Biological filters and requires less maintenance.

Mechanical Filters, on the other hand removes all unsightly things in your pond without relying too much on bacteria cultivation. They require constant cleaning and monitoring so that it performs effectively. Unlike Biological Filters, Mechanical filters does less of an efficient job in controling the ph, nitrate, doc, nitrite, amonia measurements in your water. What they do is to simply create an appearance of good clear water. Products like Eazy pods, Sand Filters, etc are what you call mechanical filters.

I agree tottaly, but the reason im getting a mechanical filter is because i ask for information fromshop some mechanical filter provide uv protection.

hi ice..

cifu kemeer said it all...SlyLaughSmileWink..

well to contribute...

biological filter purified water using bacteria turning ammonia to nitrite then to nitrate..
mechanical filter filter out 'tahi' soo dat the 'tahi' wont chock ur biological filter as the bacteria there need oxygen, klu the 'tahi' oredi cover ur bio chamber then u bacteria wont work dat efficeintly..

its not how big space ur bio chamber is but is much bacteria space u can provide to let the bacteria grow.. ie.. surface area..

I get it now i think.

so the mechanical filter will block out all the koi ' waste' then entering the bio filter with the waste tapis earlier giving it oxygen to grow.. do i get that right.. anyway i agree with you koi@kit.. more fish more filter.. so now im building up my filter system...

hopefully it will work out... since i started less than a month ago.. so need to do trial and error of stuff..

ayway u guys been a big help thanks... appreciate it though......

hi ice..

mechanical filter tapis the waste dat u r correct, well give oxygen to grow, i think u salah faham.. oxygen is present in water call 'dissolve oxygen'..H2O la tu..
bacteria grow on media, rite? if u waste cover the media then ur bacteria cant breath, then chock la, dats y bio chamber's media must b clean, well at least..

as for oxygen part.. everytime ur water surface moves there will b oxygen exchange, meaning oxygen from air masok n keluar from ayer.. but, if ur water ability to absorb oxygen is poor, then ur water's dissolve oxygen will b less, koi need at least 6ppm of dissolve oxygen..

temperature also affect dissolve oxygen..

Hi Kit,

How could we increase the water ability to absorb oxygen?

Hi Epal63,

The obvious way to increase dissolved oxygen level is via air rings and pumps. But you could also include using chillers or other cooling aparatus, to cool down your water as another option. Oxygen saturates more quickly in cold water then in warm water.

Correct me if i'm wrong but, i believe your DOC should also be considerably low in order to achieve this.

Cheers

Sly

hi epal..

cifu kemeer said it all... tks cifu..

1 more thing to add.. if u can get "izeki" super clean c combine with "izeki" magic powder, use them 1g per ton of pond water, ur water's ability to absord oxygen is better...

also read from somewhere, clay, can helps too.. not sure ah... never see results myself,... as for the izeki product, yes..
