Nitrite level 1.0mg...too high!!! Can't Post

Guys,

I'm having problem with the nitrite level in my pond. The Koi are not their usual self, like coming up to the surface when ever they see people.....last night, they were just staying at the bottom of the pond, which is un-usual.

The pond stats last night (7pm) was: (FYI, We fed the Kois' in the morning)
Tempreture: 27 C
PH: 7.5
Ammonia: 0 to 0.6
Nitrite: 1.0mg (extremely high)

What i think is because maybe, its a new pond and the Koi have been living in the pond for 3 weeks; and there is not sufficient bacteria in the pond to digest this Nitrite.

Any advise from you guys???

Cheers

hi nel,

impossible without feeding your nitrite n ammonia reading goes up... please check..

it could b due to bacteria dat turn ammonia to nitrite faster than turning nitrite to nitrate.. in simple terms, ur filter not function very well.. again, check ur feeding..

what u can do is....

1. do partial water changes, clean ur bottom drain, to dilute ur ammonia n nitrite.
2. reduce feeding..
3. add salt, it can reduce the toxic of ammonia n nitrite..

good luck..

Thanks Kit,

Will check again and i think you are right....I'm gonna stick to the partial change of water and add salt.....

How long do you think until the bacteria starts activating to digest this Nitrite.

Hi Kit,

Just for your info, its been 3 and a half weeks since we transfer my Koi's into their new home. The water readings has improve alot just like you said, that it will go into 2 phase where ammonia will be high and Nitrite the latter.

Now its:
Temperature: 27 C
PH: 7.5
Ammonia: 0 (daily flushing of the chambers and pond)
Nitrite: 0.1mg

From the above, it looks like the Nitrite level has went down by alot and pretty much stable. Its been 0.1 mg for the past 3 days. Theorically, it should take about minimum 3 months or more for the bio filter to be mature? correct me if im wrong!!so do i still need to buy the bacteria stuff that you and kemeer are talking about?

Cheers

hi nelsontaro..

good to hear ur pond water quality improve, reason is bcoz u trust d system, who need 3 mth hahahahahaha... but stick to ur bottom drain flushing for another week.. soon u will see algae grow on the wall of ur pond.. increase xposure of sunlight to ur pond.. algae indicate nitrate is there (nitrate use by algae)

Not only u, after a few visit to isma's pond, his water quality also improve (without bacteria powder).. ur suceess is my suceess toooooo...

Soon i will introduce u all momotaro"s water treatment powder... i m xperiment it rite now..

as for the bacteria powder, its ok to buy, coz u will soon feed ur koi heavily n the xtra load need the xtra bacteria to solve ur ammo/nitrite problem.. i m currently try out a liquid bacteria, if effective then i start introduce it to all.. trial n error at the moment..

bah when is the BBQ??? hahahahah
