Hi Brandon, Sorry for late reply. I have been doing travelling lately. I enclosed herewith one of the image that was discussed in Singapore forum on what to look for when koi is young. I couldnt locate which thread but I manage to find a copy of the picture. I hope singapore forum wouldnt mind as I am just re-illustrate it in the interest of koi hobby and for non-commercial purpose.
These are all the criteria which you may be interested to look at when selecting koi. Personally I think bloodline plays a big part on whether koi will go jumbo or not. I try not to deviate away from your subject and plainly focusing on koi selection. It is not about "bulky" when u see a koi, it is about whether all the features u see above is part of your selection. No doubt, we could select the best out of the group at that present moment but the actual winner of that group is yet to find out in the long run. This takes us to another stage which is koi keeping skill and all the necessary parameters to maximise its growth rate and beauty. For selecting tosai under 25cm long, me as a non-expert is based on seeing how other koi of similar character progress and then make some decision. Again, looking at bloodline. I would say the real expert still lies within the breeders. They are the real expert. So not too worry if you find out the koi you owned didnt turn out to be expected. I make mistake too sometime. Again, until you put an effort in bringing the shine out of the koi, I would say keep the koi and learn from it. Water parameters is really important and that will tell you how strong your koi immunity on parasites invasion. Looking after the water is harder than koi keeping, at least for me!! Thanks for your comment! I sure hope it grows well! Sunshine
