Kit, I will attempt to comment on these 3 kois and why they were rank A-1st, B-2nd, C-3rd. First I would like to say that all 3 are very high quality kois. However, when judging, we look at Lustre,, color, body, pattern and deportment. And always remeber, we are judging the koi as it presents itself now and not her potential or she was brilliant 1 day ago. I will concentrate on the 1st 4 areas only. By looking at the pictures, you will misjudge all 4 areas because the actual kois are not as it appear here. Looking at this pictures, many wud say that Koi A Sanke is the champ outright. But the judging was not easy between koi A & B bcos personal preference also came into play. Koi A has fantastic luster/shine, color: sumi was shiny deep black and Hi was thick and very even and all these against a porcelain white and Balanced pattern: 3 step Kohaku Hii pattern with well placed sumi on the the white. It is a koi that jumps at you. It has the WOW factor. However, this sanke is a little lean compared to the other 2 kois. Koi B- Has good Body, Good thick and fairly even Hi but the Shiroji looked a little stressed. The pattern is less balanced than Koi A. Most of all, it lacked the luster. Koi C- has very good body and has potential to be a jumbo. The shiroji is good, Hi is thick and even. The strong sumi at the tail indicate this koi will have good sumi but unfortunately, the sumi on the rest of the body has yet to develop. The pattern is the weakest of the 3. I would say this koi is a taegoi and when it goes Jumbo, the pattern will be secondary as her color quality will make up for lack of pattern. Finally, she has slightly better luster than koi B but non compared to Koi A. During judging, there was much debate over the leanness of koi A and that she has perhaps too much sumi which is really a personal taste issue. The judges decide that this sanke’s strength in the other 3 departments more than compensated for the body and declared her the best of the 3 kois. In Judging, it is always a struggle trying to put aside one's personal preferences and stay focussed on the qualities of the various factors we are entrusted to judge of a koi. Some judges dont like deep purplish red, while others are size obsessed. or dont like too much sumi regardless of how balanced they may be.... I dont envy the position of a judge bcos he has a very difficult and responsible job to perform and he cannot satisfy everybody. So pls spare a thought for the poor judge. That's one reason why I am still a trainee. Cheers
