Hi Koimann,

I gathered from Monscine posting that Koi No. 64 in the Sakai Auction
was the highest and sold at 4 million Yen. Is that correct?
Not too sure how much that will work out in term of Malaysia currency!

Hi Kit,
You are right, virus must be from Kepong Koi. Mohan's Heart Shaped Millennium Pond
has a capacity of 250 tons. What an amazing dream pond to have!
Just for your information, according to Mohan's write-up published in our local koi magazine, his pond was serviced by a twin sets of filters ( both are independent and indentical ).
The water passes into a big settlement chamber and then feeds into three vortex on either side. Just after the vortex, the water passes through another three more up and down filter chambers system.
His filter chambers has filter brushes in the settlement chamber and then followed by Japanese Mats and Bio-Balls in the Vortex and Up and Down system.
From my visit to view his pond last year, he certainly has a very effective and successful filtration set-up because the water quality was crystal clear with a touch of bluish tint to it.
I think Tao BKK's comment is correct that for big pond, it is better to have more than one independent filtration system running parallel rather than having just one series system.

ThiamHwa

Re: [koi@kit] Sakai Auction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kit,

Both Vincent and Mohan are very experienced koi's keepers and both has achieved
very good water quality to their ponds although they have different filtration system
running. It is similar to the comparison between Tao Bkk posting of " 8.5 tons pond "
and Dr. Teh's pond whereby both ponds uses different filtration system and yet the
end results achieved by both the different system are the same i.e. top skin lustre
and shine, outstanding Beni, Shoroji, Sumi etc. etc. in their kois.
These handful of hobbyists IMHO has managed to achieved a standard of keeping
kois at very high quality which are comparable to those which you see in Japan.
Knowing that, it is conforting to know that maybe koi hobbyists in the tropical
countries may one day be able to reared kois locally for competitions in Japan.
Damn! If only I knew what's in their koi keeping secrets beside the usual reasons
given i.e. bloodline quality, jumbo parents etc, etc.

Best Regards,
ThiamHwa

Re: [thiamhwa] Sakai Auction [In reply to] Can't Post

ThiamHwa,
After knowing all their design and methodlogy, There are two things I think we need:
  1. The determination and ability to effect changes to our system to match their system. Sometimes, we have the will but we have constraints Unsurethat prevent us from execution.
  2. Elbow greaseLaugh I would say that's a very important factor. If we are able to effect the system change, We need to be hardworking. like Dr Teh daily one hour routine of vacuuming the solids from his filter. The feeding routine etc..

If we cannot have an ideal system, then we must discipline and restraintPirate Keep less koi (ie buy less koi!), dont overfeed.
So when you come visit my pond and you dont see quality, lustre, body etc... All the above are my excusesCrazyWinkCoolTongue

Re: [HWONG] Sakai Auction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi HWong,

You are so humble here regarding your kois and pond's system. If I can still
remember correctly, you have won two tropies recently during the Sentul Park
Koi Competition which only goes to show that you are also among the elite class
of extraordinary koi hobbyists in Malaysia.
I will certainly not miss out on your pond and Yang's pond visit to be held
next month. Hopefully you will also share with us your secrets on 'polishing kois'
for competition based on your current success.
I totally agreed on the above two things which you have brought out for our attention.
Changes to any existing filtration system means costs and time which not many
can afford.
Secondly, I am not the type who will spend one hour routine vacuuming the solids
from the filter daily. That's becos' I am not a doctor who is capable of keeping
all things clinically clean.
If only I could invent an automatic maintenance free cleaning filtration system which
will save me a lot of headache and hence have more time spend enjoying the hobby.
Thank again for your advise.

Regards,
ThiamHwa

Hi there thiamhwa,Smile

Speaking about automatic maintenance free cleaning filter systems, i've been pondering on this idea of installing individual pumps in every chamber of the filter system. These individual pumps will be installed with timers, as so that they can switch on and off automatically perhaps twice or three times aday, whilst it sucks and cleans the chambers off dirty debris/waste.

As for refilling the water to the pond, maybe another pump and timer from our water tank/water supply into tghe pond. WALAH!!!!! Maintainance free filter system!!!!

What do you think guys??? Will it work??? COmments please........WinkWinkLaughLaugh

ThiamHwa,
Seriuosly, I am not being humble, I belong to the group that are constrained and not as diligent. So the kois in my pond presently are mediocre at best. My other kois are not in my pond. I have 2 decent kois in the pond but their bodies are deformed. I now suspect that I could have broken their backs during the many sessions of bowling them for inspection, measuring etc.

The koi club's second pond visit will be Yang's and mine pond. I will be telling what I did wrong when I first got the pond constructed and my struggles to get things right.Cool

I did enter 2 kois for the sentul show. A Shiro which was not ready for show but to keep company; the kohaku that came in second. So I won only one prize. Both the kois will stay in the 700 ton pond at sentul for at least 6 months.

Re: [kemeer] Sakai Auction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kemeer,

That's an interesting thought, but then again it could work out to be quite
a costly solution depending on the nos. of filter chambers in the system.
On second thought, you only need one pump to be placed in the settlement
chamber to take care of the cleaning purposes.
As for water refilling, I am sure your current constant 10% daily water change
into the pond should take care of that. If you do not have that in placed,
then just install one of those ball valve used in water tank to control the
topping up of water requirements.
Actually, if you have provided bottom drains for all your filter chambers to
a dry chamber for water discharge, it only take less than a minute to carry
out the back flushing to get rid of the waste from the chambers.
Better still, just follow Cifu Kit's advise and get your maid to clean it daily,
Hehehe! Just kidding!

ThiamHwa

Hi Hwong,

From the few meetings when we have the opportunity for some discussions,
I already have a high respect as to where you are placed in this koi hobby.

Is there a date set for the pond's visit? I think this will be a very educational
learning pond visit to discover what you have done wrong with your system
and your struggle for solutions to resolve the problems.

Sorry Hwong, my mistake. I thought you have won 2 prizes then. Nevertheless,
even to have won a second prize is already a great achievement.

Best Regards,
ThiamHwa

Kit, Yes Cifu Lau was there all right. He is taking a breather from kois and dabbling in Arowana. Also the sloping land his new house sits on , makes it difficult to construct a pond. HOWEVER, he is still active and is a committee member and plays a big part in our shows.
Mohantaro-san is our official photographer and reporter. So stay tune.

ThiamWah, I shall be sending out the notice together with the 6th Koi show circular.
