THE HISTORY OF MARUYAMA KOI FARM AND THE LEGENDARY "KAGURA" The first time I met the late Mr. Minoru Mano (the former presidentof Dainichi Koi Farm) was in 1967, soon after Maruyama Koi Farm opened for business in Niigata. Back then I was 29 years old and Mr. Mano 27 and got on well with our similarities in taste. Since then we developed a friendship in a close brotherhood. In those days I often stayed overnight at Mr. Mano's, when we used to be absorbed in discussions on Koi breeding (the study of Koi). At that time Nishiki-goi were cultivated mostly in Niigata where 95% of Japan's production took place. While cultivating the Nishiki-goi in Niigata with the cooperation of Mr. Mano, I learned so much about breeding. Besides, I have made many chance encounters with people and Koi. The most noteworthy was the time I met Mr. Itaru Suda and his outstanding Koi, which had a splendid crimson coat and prided its body shape as well as brightness.Later on we named her "Kagura". My eagerness and constant requests bore fruits when I finally acquired "Kagura". That was the very beginning of the Maruyama Koi Farm and the story of the legendary"Kagura". "Kagura" has borne numbers of excellent Nishiki-goi. Her first pregnance produced: 1. "Kamenoko Kouhaku" (The overall winner of the 17th All@Japan@Koicompetition in Hiroshima.)@Her blood was inherited by; 2. "Hime" or Princess (The winner of The National Fish of the Year in> two consecutive years.)
1 2 3. "Seven" (The overall winner of the 17th grown up Koi competition in Tokyo.) 4. The winner of The Minister of Agriculture Award in the Agricultural Festival in Hiroshima 5. The winner of The Minister of Agriculture Award in the 24th Agricultural Festival in Niigata. 3 4 5 6. The overall winner of the 35th All Japan Koi Competition inTakamatsu. This one takes the active role as a seed Koi in the Sakai Koi Farm in Hiroshima 7. "Yamato" (The overall winner of the 28th Rin Yu Association competition.) 6 7 Listed above are the major prizes awarded to Kagura's descendants. They have also acquired many other prizes on a local competition basis.Furthermore, Kagura has produced an excellent line of breed which have been used of as both male and female seed Koi. I can safely say that today's Japanese Kouhaku, well-known for its bright crimson could have never been accomplished without "Kagura". This is what I firmly believe. Breeding large-sized Koi has been promoted since 1985. We had hard time breeding large-sized Koi maintaining the "Kagura-Beni" quality.Generally, the color of the large-sized Koi had the tendency to lose brightness so the Koi of superior brightness are hard to breed any larger. I tried to break through this problem by trial and error for a couple of years. At one point I was at the brink of giving up breeding the stock. However, thanks to the encouragement of Mr. Mano and many other friends and family, I eventually succeeded the most difficult challenge. I can now produce large-sized Koi with the "Kagura-Beni" . One of the best is "Yamato" (picture 7). This success was accomplished by the devotion of my son, Futoshi who has grown up to be a great helper. We have a variety of one, two and three year-old Koi all of which are of the "Kagura-Beni". As stated before, Maruyama Koi Farm has successfully engaged in breeding Koi and we will keep innovating to further the produce of better quality Koi by our undying efforts.
