water quality for goldfish/koi health. Can't Post

what makes a fish healthy? im addressing fish, as im keeping koi & goldfish in my pond. since all of us are in brunei, its more relevent to discuss this among bruneian. as we use the same treated water, same location (weather wise), and water problems should quite as much be the same among us.

i like to ask the cifu here, different hobbiest/cifu has different ideas & theory, so im taking it all. hopefully it will benefit everyone.. ok here goes.

water quality, which pH works the best? i saw ppl using oyster shell.
hard water/soft water- what are this? is it conductivity? what is the quality of tap water released coming to our homes?
TDC(Total Dissolve Solids. correct kah), is this same as hard/soft water?
ammonia, nitrite should be 0 ppm. (no other way around this, right?)
nitrate, hw much do we control? some ppl like green water (nitrate should be present), others like clear water. (i have no nitrate present until now). is it good for koi to live in green or clear water. i mean regards to skin color & health, many has prove healthy green water improve their skins quality & growth, then are koi living in clear water means its not healthy for them? i hear the saying, even if your water is clear doesnt mean its healthy, but i keep the basic parameters of ammonia, nitrite & nitrate in control is this healthy?

enlightened me.. thanksWink

what makes a fish healthy?
good water

water quality, which pH works the best?
koi is hardy fish, they can tolerate ph as high as 8 and as low as 6..
only fluctuate pH make koi stress.. so dats mean even if pH8 if u can maintain it day n nite without swing, they shud b ok.

i saw ppl using oyster shell.
to raise pH if ur pond water is acidic

hard water/soft water- what are this? is it conductivity?

what is the quality of tap water released coming to our homes?
relatively soft ..

TDC(Total Dissolve Solids. correct kah), is this same as hard/soft water?
yes n no

ammonia, nitrite should be 0 ppm. (no other way around this, right?)
yes

nitrate, hw much do we control?
less than 50ppm.. preferred 0

some ppl like green water (nitrate should be present), others like clear water. (i have no nitrate present until now). is it good for koi to live in green or clear water.
doesnt matter if clear or green, as long as it healthy water for koi.. test tap water, ur reading shud b >12ppm..
no algae in pond is not a pond!!.. u must have at least a bit, if not where the nitrate goes? check 'nitrogen cycle'..

i mean regards to skin color & health, many has prove healthy green water improve their skins quality & growth, then are koi living in clear water means its not healthy for them? i hear the saying, even if your water is clear doesnt mean its healthy, but i keep the basic parameters of ammonia, nitrite & nitrate in control is this healthy?
ammonia, nitrite n nitrate dont have colour.. even at crystal clear water, they might present n very deadly..

hope above answer helps.

i havent test the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate coming from my tap water. but my ammonia, nitrite, nitrate reads 0-0-0. i got algae in my pond, but seems like everyday they are disappearaing OR maybe being eaten. my water lettuce are also slowly disappearing.

Maybe some cifu can come over and check my water.. hehe. Maybe im doing my water testing wrong..

Hi eddie..

i never test ammonia or nitrite in tap water.. i do fing traces of nitrate in my water supply thou..

TDS is not dat important IMHO, when i add onitaiji usually the GH is pretty high since its minerals.. as for KH IMHO the lower they r the more unstable ur pH become..

Hi Eddie, Yes it is true what cifu kit told you about healthy fish. There is a saying that "We take care of the water and the fish will take care of themselves. That is why it is importance for us to understand the Nitrogen cycle. An acceptable water values for koi will be Ammonia maximum acceptable -0.02mg/l , Nitrite Maximum acceptable- o.10mg/l( But the best is 0), PH can be between minimum 6 and Maximum 8.5 but it must be STABLE. KH absolute minimum 5.5 degrees, German hardness (100mg/l) but preferable minimum 7-8 degerss, german hardness (126-144mg/l) Maximum preferable under 22 degress, german hardness (under 400mg/l)But what ever the value of KH should be kept STABLE. Drastic changes on PH or KH can Stress the fish.Oyster shells are a natural source pf calcium and can be used to rectify water imbalances such as PH. But we also can use coral rock (aragonite) or dolonite to buffer pond water against PH extremes. A low PH tends to favor SUMI (Black)development while a higer PH is better for the HI (Red) and for skin tone. Our Tap water in Brunei is normally have a reading of 7 on PH and it is soft water with a high chlorine. There is no Ammonia and Nitrite is our Tap water, so you don't have to check it...Wink

Re: [hj mohd] water quality for goldfish/koi health. [In reply to] Can't Post

thanks hj mohd. surprisingly, now i can see algae growing on the walls. i bet the 3 times per day food made the fishes stomach full. i'll cut back to the normal 2 times per day routine. so it confirm that the fishes feed on the growing algae on the walls. im not sure how stable my water is. i only got to check the pH today, its fairly pH 7, at 7am, 12noon & 5pm. i'll check ammonia, nitrite & nitrate tomorrow. before feeding & after feeding. i'll see how it goes..
