will coral chips increase the Nitrite level?? Can't Post

Hi guys,

Recently i add some coral chips in my bio filter to act as pH buffer. After 1 day, when i check my water parameter, i was shocked to find out that my Nitrite reading had pop up to almost 1.0ppm.....previously (before i add the coral chips) i managed to control my nitrate reading at 0ppm.....so i quickly did a 50% water change and remove the coral chips. on the next morning, when i check the water parameter, the nitrite reading already drop to 0.025ppm.

so guys, do u all have this kind of problem???MadMadMad or did i do something wrong???

cheers,
menghun

2. did u clean ur filter b4 adding coral chip?
3. did u happen to over feed ur koi on dat particular day or previous days?

Hi Menghun,

Coral shouldn't affect nitriteSmile, like you said its to buffer your ph. Did you seed the coral first before you add them in your system???

Just curious, what about your amonnia and nitrate readings???

Jon

menghun..

master cifu koi38 is rite.. coral chip dont increase nitrite, only buffer pH..

anyway, tks for ur answer, hmmm.. strange.. i m sure aquarium shop will only sell aquarium stuff dat will improve water quality (reduce ammonia, nitrite n nitrate) dont think they will sell stuff dat increase those ammonia, nitrite or nitrate..

some more question. might sound stupid thou... did u wash the coral chip b4 use? can take picture of the coral chips?

tks..

Re: [koi@kit] will coral chips increase the Nitrite level?? [In reply to] Can't Post

yo master cifu Koi38 & Kit,

i did soak the coral chips in the water for over night.....and then only i add in the coral chips.....

one thing i found out is after i had taken out the coral chips, i soak it again for 1 day.....then i found that there was still alot of dirt or something appear....so the problem i think is due to not proper cleaning...as the coral chips may have some organic element or something.....Tongue

Menghun,

You shouldn't have any probs with either of the two. I've been using sea shells for almost 5yrs now with no probs at allCool

Clean the shells first with pond water until you can see clear water from where you're washing them, then let them sit in pond water for a day or let them dry under the sun. What's ever in those shells should be gone by the following daySmile

Jon
