Beginner needs help ..... Can't Post

Dear friends,

I live in Semarang and I've started keeping KOI since 2004 with lots and lots of fall no rise yet Frown

I used to keep local KOI from Blitar and now I'm moving into an imported KOI. One of the
reason is that I can not find (yet) a local KOI that can grow over 80cm, or even if they can grow, their pattern and color
seems to diminished (true for my Shiro and Ai goromo) Frown or even have other x-tra unwanted color (black tiny winy dot on kohaku Mad while
she already 50cm). BUT the main reason is that because of my faults all of them died because of overdosing (activated carbon) FrownFrownFrown

Now, after many researches on the internet, I have been convinced by articles that japanese breeders are very strict with their methods of breeding
and therefore their Kohaku has less (or no) chance of getting an extra additional color (black) and has a bigger chance to grew over 80cm. Is this
really true? or is it because of their mudpond and water quality?

I have just finished reconstructing my pond.
The total volume of my pond is 3,100 gallons including filtration system - 25% with depth just over 2M (pond's area is small though FrownFrown)
My filtration system has 4 chambers with the first three chambers being populated only with bioballs and nothing else and the final chamber is
filled in with Japanese Filter Mats and 39 Watts UV lights by WaterTech. Is this sufficient for my pond?
I don't use zeolit because Internet says that it has no use after a period of time. Is it right?

Currently I have 6 female and no male KOI with size ranging from 55cm - 75cm and I'm aiming to grow all of them bigger than 85cm.
Is it realisable or my pond is just too small to make them reach their full potential size?

My final questions is how much does Saki hi-growth and Saki color really cost? I know that my KOI seller sell them BUT because
he also needs them to feed his KOI AND not many people are selling Saki in Semarang so I assume that he is selling them at a very high price
(910k/15kg and 125k/15kg respectively). Is this price too expensive, or is it the standard price?

Thank you so much.

Re: [MakubeXXX] Beginner needs help ..... [In reply to] Can't Post

greetings,

your pond sounds ok, around 15 tons give or take? 6 large kois would look wonderful.

I have a friend in Japan with a fairly small pond ( 1m x 2m x 90cm). 5 koi reside in it, ranging 50cm+ to 92cm. They are pets and grown since small. The 92cm koi however is old and deformed.

What I am trying to say is how a koi could grow large depends on its parentage and lineage. To grow a koi to its fullest potential depends on the external factors;water, food, and space. Koi Farms in Japan have large ponds and mud ponds to grow their prodigies; some will only put 1 koi in every 15000 gallons of water. With your current pond, you may grow your Kois to their fullest, it could just take a longer period of time. Take my word with a pinch of saltSmile

The black dot is truly a bugger. It happens. Even on nice Japanese imports (seen it, not on mine Wink, knock on woodTongue)

The cost of food sounds about right.

Could you please inform me how you overdosed with activated carbon/ac? ac can clear up or lower your BOD, COD, DOC, levels. just make sure the ac are steam processed (not phosporic acid activated/chemically activated) and of granular form, therefore it will not cloud your water. A good way to use it is in a wet/dry type filter/shower, it ensures all the water to pass through the ac and also promote less anaerobic areas. Also avoid direct sunlight to avoid algae to grow on the ac.

Just some thougths of a simple koi keeper.

Cheers,
Kent
