Feeding Kois Can't Post

Hi guys,
Since feeding kois is the 2nd excitement to me, I would like to know if any of you know how the optimal feeding way for kois so they can growth well. Since I ever bred discuss, in my experience the optimal way is feeding them every 2 hours with a "quick eaten" portion. Could I do the same to these kois but in longer period, let's say about every 4 hours or 5 hours a day?

Monscine,

I think its depend on how good your water systems are? If it is fully cycled I think you can
feed them every 4 hour. Please consider the space capacity too as they will grow bigger
hence you will face with overcrowded issue. Also they need the space for exercise in order
not to develop pot belly. Again much growth can affect their color as they expand their
body mass in a relatively short period.

if you have the time or assistant to help you I think you can feed them three time a day
with enough food that finish within 15 minutes. For me I only fed them twice a day,
in the morning and in the evening.

I feed mine 4 times a day as long as they can consume the food in 10mins max during hot summer months. But winter time unless the water temp is above 12deg C, I don't. You also have to consider the capacity of your filter. The more you feed the more waste they'll produce.Crazy

Hi Ricky,

I think you are right. I might consider those point of views. My pond get more cloudy since I have fed my koi's around 4-5 times a day. This probably cause the filtration hasn't working well yet. Hence tomorrow I'll a submerse pump which is connected to digital timer to exercise my koi's. Since I have 37 koi's in my 10T pond, I would think to make the pond longer and deeper. I would consult the pond filtration design first then. I'll do this because there about 4 kois I wanna buy again which are sizes from 40+ to 60+ Tongue. Just can't stand my pocket to the kohaku I wanna buy...Crazy

I'm still thinking of how to move the existing kois in case I rebuild the pond Unsure ....

Keep in spirit though.... Laugh

Monscine,

Maybe you can consider to stop feeding your kois for a moment until your water parameters are ok.
No worry the kois can live for a week without food.

Please add air stone to your pond as it will increase the level of oxygen in your pond. Also you would
need to stop the medication as it can kill the good bacteria too.

Decholinator is sold in the fish shop and if you cannot get it please let the cholrine from the tap water
settle in a container for one night before adding the water to your pond.

Could you tell us the filterization systems that you have?

Re: [rickytanoto] Feeding Kois [In reply to] Can't Post

hI rIck,

I do cut the feeding frequency to only 2x / day. I do put air stone with hi blow 80W pumping machine. Today I'll go yo fish shop and drag the dechlorinator.

About my pond, I'm using OASE Biotec 18 with its UV, and only 3 room filter chamber Crazy, with the first chamber filled with brushes, 2nd one with jap mate and bio balls, and the 3rd for pumping out water. Since I thought the filter is not enough for my pond, I might add another biotec filter again. How the optimal way to built the mechanical filter chamber actually related to koi?

Thanks

Monscine,

Glad that you have reduce the feeding frequency it will help to clear the water in several days.
Good thought that you already have air stone, I believe you got that from your experience in
keeping discuss. Yes please get the decholinator and remember only decholinator not kois.Sly

Is Oase biotec 18 the pump or the filter itself? Could you please tell us the dimension of each chamber?

Re: [rickytanoto] Feeding Kois [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Rick,

Hahaha this time I only bought antichlorine as same function as decholinator i guess. I won't need it by the next two days, cause I added three 1000 ltr tanks only for the pond with its own aerator putting inside.

The biotec 18 is a filter which need a water pump to run. The filter could be used to handle a 20 m3 pond because I'm using a Promax 20000 pump machine (the ability is depend on the pump) The dimension of pond the first 2 filter chambers are 60cm length x 38cm width x 110cm depth and a 40cm x 40 cm x 110 cm outflow chamber.

Hi Monscine,

U can try Golden Koi for Manda Nishiki...as for Momo hi growth, the product is discontinued as momotaro decided to produce the All season instead...However, I think Max Koifarm of Singapore would have a bit of Momo hi growths left...cheers

Hi there ...

Glad to see your excitement with the kois and your pond. From the picture at the other thread I can see that you have a great setup of pond. However I cannot stop wondering if you have a bottom drain. Monscine if you are going to renovate, we'll be glad to give you advises on this forum. Maybe you can post on this forum the layout of your pond setup.

Also I notice in the picture that you have PVC pipes coming out of the side wall. What are they ?
About feeding I always soak the dry pellet until they get soft before feeding. That way when the pellets get eaten by the kois they don't expand in the koi's belly. And the kois themselves don't over eat.

I agree with the others, also with ricky, that you should stop feeding your kois for now. Better you buy bacteria starter, if you don't already have one, put it in your bacteria chamber of the oasis. Then you wait for about two weeks, check the water again to make sure the amonia and nitrite is not present. With the parameters alright, you can start feeding your kois.

Where do you live?

Re: [rullysim] Feeding Kois [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi too,

My humble to have your appreciaton to my pond though it is far from perfect. I am a new comer to this hobby and build the pond was my very first experience handling large water capacity fish tank. Before I was a discuss hobbist and just playing with aquariums. So, when build the pond I took my experience from keeping the discuss and breeding them. Firstly I wrote down the pond design and handed it to plan worker who ussually build a fountain like we often see when we cross the road of Senayan area, Pulomas, and so on. Well, got bargain the price, got the deal, the work moved on. Within time the pond finished. I left to Papua to visit my project over there, got back to Jkt, filled up the pond to its top and waited a day. The next morning, water level came low!!!! Frown The pond had leakage which I didn't even know where since I used natural stone to cover the cement.

I called another worker, but this is a bulding specialist. I told the problem, bargained again, got the deal, and rebuilding the pond started. Base to the first experience, I discuss to a koi dealer about pond filtering design. He gave me some pont of views. Got back home, I managed the filter design and gave to the worker. As the pond built, water filled up, kois jumped in and the water pump rolled on, I just realized I missed some essential parts of the pond. The pond doesn't have a bottom drain since the house outpipe position is higher than the bottom (this what I thought firstly). Later I found the bottom base design is crucial to collect fish waste and any other. And then I found I didn't put an overflow as this actually very usefull. That's why I bought the OASE skimmer at quite expensive price to just have a tube Crazy but not to its technology Sly. I amazed how this thing work though it only 74 cm high and I have to put holder below it to keep it to the surface. I think I would not renovate the pond anymore, just adding more bioballs filtration. I ever plan to build another pond in front of house park, but doesn't have approval from my "suhu" about the hong sui Laugh.

The PVC just a temporer outflow from the last filter chamber which in one line to the fountain.

Your idea about feeding to prevent belly quite interest me. How long u soak the pellets?

Btw, I live in Sunter area. And u?

Monscine,

I share the same problem with you when I built my pond the first time. Lucky me at the time it was only a small pond of about 1 ton. I demolished that pond and built a new one. Then I built a second pond which is my current pond and again had a similar problem that you had .... leakage. Sometime later I had it fixed with a cement based solution I found at Mitra 10. Good stuff, and now the pond is running excellent except for one "minor" problem .... not big enough Wink
I want to expand it but the "ruler of the house" does not approve. So until then I can only wonder how wonderful it is to have a real big pond over there in place of my current pond

Monscine I live in Cempaka Putih. You are welcome anytime to stopby at my place. To make a bakki shower without having the bacteria house, you can actually use bio balls as the media. The idea of a shower is to have the water to be in contact with air as much as possible. While the function of the media is to provide a place for the good bacteria to grow.

I did not have a shower before. Finally I decided to give it a try and never stop thinking why I did not have shower from the beginning. Before implementing the shower, my water was a little bit smelly ... bau amis ... but now the water is nice, no smell whatsoever and I notice the fish is more active and eat more. Same as you, I also want to get my hands on the bacteria house but until then you should try to build a shower using only bio ball as the media. For the basket to place the balls in, Makro Kelapa Gading has big baskets you can buy.

How did it go with your pond visit to Rendy's?

Hi Rully,

Well, now I know how does it feeling once we got jump to the koi world. Can't stop thinkin the way to keep them live happily on the pond. I just went to my office just once this week Pirate. And got to work on the pond optimalization. Lastly I'm thinking of widen the pond to wet kitchen area which just finished. Put the glass over the construction and change the space to dining room. Quite nice I think having dine with seeing fish below us Tongue. Maybe next week nor next month after I get back from visiting my project, I would call the steel constructor to discuss this. I did think a way when Benny told me that's hard to build one like that since the glass could not be clean up. This shoud challenge me to think the design and discuss it with the constructor. If this could be done, my pond would be about 6m length and 3m width. This time I would make it deeper since kids could not jump on that space Wink.

Well, I might want to see your pond and share experiences we have. I would do the bakki, and have ordered bh to michael cheng but just don't know still when they would arrive. Otherwise I shall buy them from Max in Singapore. But is it really work good with bioballs?

About Rendy's pond, u might see the report on 3rd pond visit. I put some pics over there.

Keep in spirit on kois Sly
