Filter chambers...how many? Can't Post

Hi folks,

We get use to see a lot of ponds with each filtering systems being used. One of them is a pond with filter chambers for mechanical and biological filtering process. Each time we build a pond, usually people would build filter chambers on the pond design for the two kind of filter process. I have questions, how many chambers actually we need for a pond? Is there any formulation to determine the amount of chambers we need for a pond beside the filter volume compare to the pond size? Some say that the more the chambers, the better the filter process...is this true?

Cheers,

Hi Handy, just a few tips be4 u proceed wt your pond reconstruction:

1. Sufficient filtration e.g. 25 - 30% with combination of multi chambered and bakki shower type of filtration
Multi chamber: settlement --> mechanical --> bilogical ---> shower ---> pond, pond turnover
2. Depth and width e.g ideal depth 2m with bottom landscape that looks like a cone to allow bottom drain to suck up the waste. ideal width 3m so easy for us to net the fish. ideal dimension 3 x 6 or 7 or 8 m
3. Easy pond maintance e.g. that allow us to drain different chamber independently and allow us to by pass the filter during medication
4. Cover your pond to avoid pH drop due to acid rain
5. The quality of the pond structure --> prevent collapse and leakage, for pond paint i hv good brand recommendation, pls pm me.

Thats all i can think of right now. Anyone pls add if i m missing anything. Btw, you can refer to some koibitos in which discussed the pond of some japanese top hobyist for reference.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your tips. The thing that make curious is the amount of the filter chambers. Logically, if we add more chambers, then the nitrification process would be more good. But how can we calculate how many chambers we need regarding the size of the pond that we want to make? So we could have effective yet efficient filtering system for the pond.

Cheers,

handy,

sorry to jump into your thread again. If the flow rate from one chamber to another is done correctly, then i would say the more chambers the merrier. DTBH from Malaysia have a filter system which is 2X the size of his pond and he just added a baki shower system to the filter as well.

of course the downside is when it comes to washing the filters, you'll have a tought time.CoolPirate

Handy, it is a though question to answer for me. All i can think of by having more chamber you probably slow down the water flow and easier to drain each chamber independently whenever you want to do minimal cleaning. On the other hand, i saw an article in koibito issue 5 reagrding the pond with uncut japanese mat (2x1m) laying on top of one another in its chamber. Also less chamber means more space for filter media. Better ask for someelse opinion in case you still want a scientific answer to this hehe...

i guess so.the water needs to be maintained by up-down flow.in my opinion, u must precisely calculate the volume of the filter so that it can handle so ur pond n fish waste. At least we have 3 biological chambers ..Cool
