Hi Ari,

Sorry for your losses. I think it would be best to diagnose the reason behind the gill rot problem, before is there any flashing/flicking? no parasite on skin surface ? fish hanging upside down? new fishes ? heavy downpour ? Heavy manifestation of parasitic infection will lead to secondary infection (Bacterial). This is why fishes will let us know if they are being bothered by acting/swimming in abnormal way like flashing constantly etc.

If parasite is detected early on then you can treat the pond either by shot gun approach or get a miscroscope to identify the bugs. Since now your fishes is in serious condition, you can ask your dealer or experienced person to take a look of the problem so they can recommended medications. Thats why it crucial to detect early signs of discomfort in our fishes before seroius problem arise. Hope it helps.

Ari,

I am so sorry that your kois are still fighting for their lifes.

I read some of your posting before where you mentioned you saw white spots

on the gill of your dead kois. This parasite is called Itch (white spot) and usually

occured when there are sudden change in the water temperature. Itch can be

taken care with formalin; however, it may take some time since Itch has a

unique life cycle. They will feed on the kois membrane and then lay eggs on the

surface of the container or algae. We can only kill the adult one but not the eggs

thats why you find it very hard to get rid of this disease.

My suggestion is to put the sick kois in a small container. Why small? so you can

heat the water with heater, because the warmer the water is the faster the eggs

will hatch so the faster you can get rid of the adult parasites.

Please use the same dosage of formalin that you have used before since the first

time you tried it you already get rid of the adult; however, later this disease occur

again since the eggs already hatch and the new adult has infected your kois again.

For the secondary bacteria infections you can use malachite green and give the sick

kois antibiotic food.

I hope this can help you.

ricky

Thank for your attention, Ricky and Paul. Sorry, I am late to reply, coz I am busy with my job as a journalist. I had check their gill, and I am sure it's gill rot. They are not eat anything. So, as your advice, I put them to the small thank --about 400 liter water-- and heat the water with heater. I used two water heaters in the quarantine pond. And, I treat them with methyline blue and little salt (about 1%). In other day, I used teramicyn, and malachite green to. May the salt too much, in the night, these kois was panic. They look hurt. So, I change the water with fresh water --after 12 hours since treatment. Now, my two kois --kohaku and asagi, look healthy. The had ate food I fed them. They thame again, so I can fed them with my hand. I am very very happy, Ricky and Paul, I can save them. Now, I have new experiences for treatment koi. Thank you for your help, my friend.
See you.
Rgds,
Ari

Ari, I am glad your kois are getting well. Yes we can learn a lot from handling sick kois. May be you need to make
sure that your water in the main pond remain stable. Please wrap your water heater with stone around it. I think
this stone will keep the heat much longer so at the end it will increase the temperature in the water.
