Gonna rebuild my pond, anybody can help ? Can't Post

Hi, salam kenal !

I have a koi pond now, well, not really for koi at first. It's about 1.5x1.5 metres and its depth it's only 0.5 metre. I want to rebuild it and make it bigger about 2.4x2.2 metres (wish i got more land inside my house...hehe).However, me and my parents stuill arguing about its depth. Is 1.5 metres enough ? Coz, their main concern is if it is too deep, they afraid all my cousins sink into the pond and well, 1.5 metres is a killer depth for children.

I've seen a few pums such as Grundfos, Noochi (in Kasa Koi) and my old time favourite Eheim. Anybody know how to get a right one such as how to choose ? Again, due to land constraint, the only two possible way to build my filter is by external way. My plan is to get a cylinder fiber and used it as settlement area and after that i'm gonna use home made bakki shower.

I made my own bakki shower and filled them with bioball ( the normal one). Well, they are working really well, though i never measure nitrate and etc. I think it is working, my koi are very very healthy. Never heard any problems about them from my parents while i was in singapore.

So with 2.2x2.4x1.5 which pump is recomended ? I cant use gravitational system, so i put all my faith in the pump. I saw the pond in Kasa Koi, They also using pump to suck in all the dirts and well i think it is working. For information, Im gonna hang both cylinder and bakki shower on top of my pond and if possible i may extend the bakki shower to 2nd floor.

So which pump should i buy ? and Is Vortex cylinder and custom made bakki shower (made from zeolit, carbon acctive and bioball) enough ? Oh, and where i can get Momo Bacteria stone ( forgot its name, something like bioball) in jakarta ? and do you know where to get both good local and imported koi in Jakarta ? About 15-20 cm. Coz, my dad and i like to watch koi grow rather than buy a big big one.

Thanks, hope anybody can help me.

Dimas

Welcome to the forum Dimas,

From your posting, I guess that u have quite a good knowledge about kois...I started the hobby for 6 months only, gained some insights along the way, and will be happy to share some tips with you...

As your koi grows, I'd think that the deeper the pond, the better it is for the kois...of course there's some limit to it, 2.5+ Meters is abit overboard, as u can't really see the kois when they're at the bottom...In your case, considering ur pond surface area is not big (around 5.3 m2), 1.5 meters would be enough...if u go deeper, oxygen problem can surface...Our friend, Luckyl construct his pond with only 1 meter depth to play with, and he consequently regrets it (can hear him banging his head he2), as his kois gain some size...To prevent juniors from playing near the pond, U could build a fence around the pond's parameter or alternatively, put a net (u could get this at Golden Koi) on top of ur pond...putting a net would be a cheaper solution, however, clarity can be a problem when viewing the koi...

From the pond spec given (1.5 m depth), ur pond's volume is roughly 8 m3 or tons...aim for a pump that can circulate ur water volume once per hour or once every two hours (go for 4000-8000 liters/hour), I use Tsurumi and Nocchi and they're great...u can consider the smaller Nocchi (cheaper compares to Eheim) that is able to deliver around 8000 l/h of water...I also recently found a couple of descent quality submersible pump at Ace Hardware that would probably suit your pond spec (lower turnover rate) better...

Dimas, if u could, please use the gravitational system instead, as recommended by lots of sifus in this forum such as dttk, etc...It's actually better to use ur cylindrical vortex as a settlement chamber (connected to bottom drain from ur pond) and include at least one filter chamber (custom made from fibreglass is still ok), then u can put a pump in the custom made filter chamber, and pump the water into bakki showers...U could read previous threads in this forum, about the importance of gravitational fed system (w/ bottom drains) as opposed to pump fed system...

Bakki showers w/ bioballs do contribute considerably in improving nitrification process...If ur pond's not overcrowded, u could use a couple of stacks (with 4 or more rows) of the showers as ur sole biological filter...Bacteria House may not be available anymore in Jakarta...I used to get BH from sunter koi, but recently out of stock...If u're looking for small tosais, Golden Koi en Sunter Koi may be the place to go...Here's some of the dealers contact details:

Hi,

Thanx !

I just realised that my dad bought noochi pump, i did not know the specs, but if i'm not wrong it's quite powerful.

Well, i prefer using gravitational system as it really works compared to pump system. The problem is, i have to sacrificed some of the pond area and from my experience to clean up the gravitational chamber is very 'painful'. Both my pond now and in Sukabumi using this, and when the time comes to clean the chamber...No space, very deep and a lot of mess to clear up. My pond now using this chamber and i used ceramics and glass to build it (so it will easier to clean the wall). However, still very hard as my dirty water output ( saluran pembuangan air kotor ke luar rumah) is above the water level. I tried to use my gigantic vacuum cleaner but still very hard to clean the sides.

So, i decided to use the pump and my question is, does this system works ? Today my dad asked me about the vortex cylinder, and he told me that he can buy the small water tower (er...buat nyimpen air diatas rumah yang warnanya orange). And he told me that he can get the 250 litres one, again, does this amount of volume for vortex enough ? About bakki shower, is there any specific specs to construct it ? like the depth, volume. From my hand made bakki shower now, i'm having a problem as the last bakki has very small amount volume of water only about half filled) but the first one almost fully filled. How to make sure that the distribution of water to all the bakki equal ?

Oh damn...so i can't get the bact house. Well, do you know when the next shipment is ? and How much it is cost ? I saw a circular bio-ball (shaped like a ball) in Kasa Koi, compared these ball bio ball and bact hse, which one better ?

A bit out of point, i have a mud pond in Sukabumi. And i put a few screwed up koi there, today i went there and i was shocked that the sanke that i put there has a very very reddish red. I think my maid there only give pelet ikan lele, nothing else special. So i decided to dig up the mud pond and gonna build a proper one. The water comes from spring water ( i forgot what is mata air in english...haha...). Agaain, is there any special requirements for mud pond ( i mean compared to mud ponds in Japan) ?

Thanks thanks
=Dimas
