Re: [pinpin] New Member And Also New To Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Pinpin,

Welcome to this forum. This is just a great place to gather important informations regarding the kois world. I'm really glad having a new hobbyist. The planning to build the pond is very crucial to the kois because water is their medium to live, so that you have to take care the water quality as well as possible. There are some pond designers that could help you out about designing and planning the pond. The whole ideas and argumentations about the pond could be found at this forum also. That's all what i can say for now cause I'm really tired coz I just get back from Surabaya after attending the 2nd All Indonesian Combined Koi Show 2005...it was 4 hours delay to get home...alamakkk.

Don't be hesitate to ask something or discuss something on this forum, cause I found myself that this forum really helpful to give a clue about one and other things on kois world.

Once again, welcome to the world of colours kois...

Cheers,
Handy

Thanks guys for such warms welcome, I have been searching throughout this forum about constructing a new pond. And Yes there are lots of informations provided. Thank god, but lol still not quite catching what they discussing about..
As A newbie I will be asking so much and very very much ie:

1. What the ideal size for koi pond?
2x4 and with the depth around 1m is my planned pond size.
2. As I read from previous posts from alot sifu/experts, they discussing about constructing a filter, the question what
the correct size for filter. Does tukang kolam knows to build one for koi pond?
3. For friends who lived in jakarta perhaps could refer me where to get tukang kolam :)

Thanks guys once again for replying my thread! :)

Hendrik

Hi Hendrik,

Actually there are not that so complicated to build a pond. You might see this link for your reference if you want to set a small pond : http://www.kepongkoi.com.my/tip01.php However, if you want to be more detail about the design of the pond then you might need a designer to plan your pond. There are a lot pond construction plans with each argumentations. For me, I just would follow the one that I think has the best water condition. Seeing is believing. You could PM (personal message) me and I can introduce you to some pond designer and constructor. Myself would build a new pond over the existing one. I'll try to answer what you questioned before :

1. For the depth, I was discussed about this with a lot of breeders and dealers...and through their experiences, the best one is on 2 until 2,5 m depth. More than 2,5 m would make the sunlight hard to get through to the bottom. And they said, after eating, mostly kois would stay on floor rather than swimming around. Maybe this has relation to water pressure.

2. The best volume (not the size) for the filter is 30% of your pond capacity. So lets say you want to build a 100 ton pond, you should prepare about 30 ton filter volume. This is the theorical, but most say the water cycle of the filter get the mos important one. The water of your pond should at least cycled on 1 hour to 1,5 hour. The faster the better. The professional level of "tukang kolam" (pond builder) should be considered as careful as you can. You don't want the leakage happen to your pond once it runs, cause you wouldn't know where the leakage position is... Crazy

Hi Hendrik,

I've found no problem on the link. The pump must be turn on for 24/7 to make filtration process go on continously to feed the nitrobacter with the ammonia the kois produced.

The skimmer is a part of a pond to suck the debris, oily suface (which might cause from the food you fed the kois), leaves, etc. There is also a protein skimmer to remove protein waste from the water. Skimmer function is so important for a pond.

Handy

Re: [pinpin] New Member And Also New To Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Hendrik ,

I heard from some expert for ideal pond size : min. width : 3x of koi length
length : 7x of koi length
depth : 2 - 2.4m

So if you want to grow your koi to max. 80cm size , minimum should be : 2.4 x 5.6 x 2 m .

Water quality & food quality is very important to support growth of koi .
If possible , don't make your pond overcrowded because koi can grow from 20cm - 60cm not more than 12 months .

Filter chamber at least 30% of pond size .
But there are some new filter system doesn't require big volume such as : Nexus + Answer .

Cheers,
Riwin

Hello Im back, at last my pond is finished but it turned out not so good, damn contractor ran away before it was completed. lol my very 1st pond and messed up. so sad :(.
Handy boss, any idea where to get a nice and cost saver protein skimmer?(bokek)
I think 2m in depth a bit too much for me, for now ill just stick to 1.5m
Anyway back to discussion and needed some guru2 advices, my pond built at my house backyard somehow didnt get enough sunlight during the day, thats why plants for vege filter always die. do you guys know what type of water plants that will survive without sunlight. Does sunlight really needed to maintain koi colour? ie. like red stays red, not fading to some yellowish. If it really need sunlight any idea how to get thru this? Metahalide lamps? or UV?

Thanks guys

Hi Hendrik,

Sorry for replying you so long. For protein skimmer, you might want to try DIY (Do It Yourself) corner on this forum. Please find the one that made by Koi38. Once you get the process how it works than I believe you could make it yourself on a very budget price.

Congratulation for your pond. I believe nowadays you have some spirit to add some more koi collections. Your depth just okey. Infact my old pond just had 1m depth but the grow still good. Sunlight exposure about 2-4 hours a day should be enough for your pond. It's believe the sunlight has something coorelation with koi healthy and beauty. And I guess this function could hardly be replaced by adding specific lamps to your pond. Don't put UV directly to your kois. And UV should not contact with us either.

Cheers,
