New to forum Can't Post

Hi guys....

I just join this forum and I am a new koi hobbyst. Find this forum very helpful for beginners. I just done a new pond and made a few beginner's mistakes. What is the ideal height and width? cause my pond's height is 1.2m. Some of the dealers in jakarta said it is too shallow. Just wondering, is there anyone in this forum who lives in Jakarta Barat area? If you don't mind, can I visit yours? cause I want to learn from firsthand experience.

Last but not least, is there anyone from Indiana?

Thank u for the nice forum and your kind assistances would be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Felix

1.7-2 Mtrs would be the ideal heights. More than 2 mtrs is also not good, as explained by Kentaro Sakai when he was in Jakarta. Have you finish constructed the pond yet? adding the height can also be done upward, not necesserely dig down. As for for the width, a reasonable rule of thumb, if possible, would be at least 2x the height and 1/2-1/3 the length. However, please be cautioned that if the pond is too wide, it'll be hard to catch the fish...

Are you from Purdue or Bloomington?

1.2m sounds ok, where is it positioned? how are the kois? Should they are happy n feeding like crazy, then its all good. A Japanese friend of mine has a small pond in Japan, only 1 x 2 x 1 meter, he managed to grow one of his kois to 92 cm, took a long time to reach that size, but again, these kois are purely kept as pets.

Just a thought of a simple koi keeper.

Hi rendy_e

Thanks for the explanation. I have finish constructed the pond. It is 8m X 1.2m X 1.3m. Also the height is halfway up. I will remember your advice when next time I build a new pond. Another problem is the pond only has 20% of filter capacity and it is located outdoor without sunroof. Hope we can share more information in the near future.

I am from Bloomington. R u from purdue? Cool

Thank U

Hi...

The kois are great and feeding like crazy. I guess they'r alright. May I know the type of your friend's koi? 92 cm is awesome. I hope my kois can grow to that size since some people told me that my kois can grow up to 70 cm due to my pond size (8 x 1.2 x 1.2m). I really appreciate your comment.

Thanks

Hi Felix,

Great to hear your koi's doing well. Of course, with good genetics and extremely low stocking rate, kois can reach their full potential regardless the pond's size. However, your kois will be grateful if you could provide maximum space for them. We do have Pond Visit and dealer visits quite regularly among the forum guys last year, you could join us for the next one. I hope we'll have one soon Smile...For Filter, if your filter surface area is at least 30% of the pond's, that should be ok, regardless of the capacity itself. Having said that, bigger filter capacity is always better...I think you'll have no problem reaching 70 Wink...

Actually, I used to stay at Brisbane, Oz...My cousins are from Purdue...

Hi rendy_e,

Thank you for your invitation to join the the community. I would be glad to join the pond visit and especially the dealer visits. Tell me the time and place and I'll be there. These last few months, me and my friend have visited quite many of koi dealers including two places in Bandung area. However, we were clueless about the price range. It would be very helpful for me if I can have dealer visits together with the experts Wink. If you don't mind, can I pm you sometimes?

thanks

Hi Felix,

How old is this pond of yours? Ive seen a pond matured in less then 5 months, I ve seen a pond mature a lot longer. Outside good ponds (direct hit by sunshine) mature quicker. Some like to cover their filters, some dont. I prefer to avoid sunlight in the filter area, I believe the mulms and the string algaes may cause anaerobic areas. In the beginning i use the testkits every a few days, just to make sure the water is safe.

The fish mentioned I believe was a japanese magoi.

Thats my five cents.

Cheers,
Kent

Hi...

It's just one month old. What are the indications that the pond has matured? Smile Cause some said it can matured in two or four weeks. I used nitrite test kit today and the result was not so good Tongue. I believe, the test result is between 0.25 - 0.50 mg/l. (Hardly to differentiate the color). In the next few days, I try to replace the water by 25%. Hope it can help.

Thanks Ken

hi,

some opinion differs, one thing I know, mature ponds will render your test kits useless :) as there is nothing to measure anymore, jk. water change is a good thing, a bit of nitrite in your new pond is showing there are some nitrification, a good sign. Keep monitoring the water, dont overstock yer pond, then you'll do just dandy.

cheers,
Kent
