New to forum and koi Can't Post

Hi everybody

My name is Dee. I'm new to this forum and certaintly new to KOI. My husband and I are interested with KOI since we went to one of our japanesse friend who has koi pond on their backyard. We're planning to build a new koi pond on our yard and hopefully with joining this forum I can get as much as information on this magnificent fish and meet some people with the same hobby more experience to shared.

Right now I got this small pond around 2 m x 3 m on our back yard. Built with cement and tile. My question is, can I use it as KOI pond before the new one done? What are the basic needs to make a KOI pond suitable for them? Thank you guys...

Regards,
Dee

Hello Dee welcome to this hobby Smile
if u want to build a new pond i suggest to consult a koi dealer or a fellow koi enthusiast, u can take advice on how to build a proper koi pond and filter set up ..
the most important thing on a koi pond is the filter, it can consist of brush, japanese mat, bioball, vortex, etc ..
many koi dealer would gladly show u how to build koi pond plus a few rough sketch or they might even call a few experience builder to build the pond 4 u, just as long as u buy the pond equipment or a few kois from them Wink ..

Hi kohaku_doitsu

thank you for welcoming me to this new hobby. I can say I fell in love with them since I saw a bunch of KOIs in the pond of our japanesse friend. They are so friendly and even they would eat from my hand. I love their bright colours and so contrast with others.

anyway, thank you so much for the tips. I will try to get around and see if we can find a good pond builder in town that knows a lot about KOI. Thanks again..

Regards,
Dee

Hi Dee,

Welcome to the right place to start your new hobby cause you might found any information yet appreciation about kois. My suggestion on first time keeping koi is to keep the water well, cause water is the media for koi to live as we need air to breathe. So first thing first, you have to prepare filtering system which adequate to clear the water. In this forum, you could find some of filtering systems to be applied on your pond. Oya, how deep is your pond right now? Some say that the ideal volume for filtering is about 30% of pond volume. If you wish to built your pond, then you might PM me and I'll give you some recomendation pond builder with quite good system. Btw, I'm building my new pond right now which plan to be finish next month.

Happy koi and good luck.

Cheers,
Handy

Hi Dee,
Welcome to this hobby, as recommended by other member, for koi keeping, maintaining good water quality is key, make sure you have proper filter for your pond, and I recommend you to browse and read through other topics in this forum to look for information on maintaining water quality and pond building.
Another personal recommendation is that depends on whether both of you have experienced in keeping fresh water fish, the basic knowledge of keeping fresh water fish will help alot, if you don't have this basic knowledge, I will recommend you to start with local kois for a while, then slowly switch to imported koi, reason is simple, lokal koi is easier to keep and of course cheaper. This is just my personal opinion......Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Cheers,
Edo

Hi Edo

thanks for the warm welcome. I agree with you, I thought to get some local KOIs first for a start since I'm very very new with this. I do have experince with fresh water fish, I have Arwana. But I guess there's lot different between having a fresh water fish in an aquarium and having some in the pound, right? pound is new for me. I heard that we should layerd the pound with vinyl? is it true??

Dee

Hi Dee,

Since your existing pond is 2 x 3 m, then I guess the best depth is about 1 to 1,5 meter. A knee height I guess not deep enough for kois unless you only want to have them to add your future garden pond. But for now, just move on with your existing pond and have excitement with it. It's okey if you want to put some water plantation around your pond to have natural pond look. For filtering system, usually people build it upon the side of the pond and some other have dedicated filter house. Since I bet your pond doesn't have bottom drain to suck all the debris, I think you could use submersible water pump as I used to applied on my old pond. I'm using OASE Biotech filter for my old pond and added some bacteria house ceramic from momotaro into 3 water tank (did it myself).

Patient is the key for first entry of keeping kois. Don't be too rush unless you'll have your kois floating up RIP on your pond. Prepare your pond and its ecosystem first (mechanical & biological filter should run well), then you may jump in your kois into it. Local kois for first time is just a good idea. Myself did that before I moved to the imported one.

Please read this forum as neutokoi said and make the important notes of any thread which interesting for you.

Cheers,

Hi Dee,
It will be good if you can post the picture of your current pond, with info on the location of pipe, drain, pump, fountain, water fall, filter etc. if you have one, then it will be easier for us to assist you. Most importantly , don't be too rush to go to buy kois this weekend, until you are sure that your pond is ready for kois.

Talking about the depth of pond, you still can keep kois in the water that is a knee high, but not ideal and the fish may not grow into 'jumbo' size. My pond is just 40 cm depth, but I have been keeping kois in there for almost 2 years now, and so far they are just fine. Since you plan to build a new pond, it will be good if the depth is around 1.2 - 1.8 m.

cheers,
Edo
