Finally! the first official pond visit for this forum's Jakarta members took place yesterday 5th Feb 05. The venue was the pond of Luckyl (aka Hasan alias H.Udin). Total members who participated was 5. Rullysim (Rully) arrived on time @ 11AM. While rendy_e (Rendy), Maris, and soelistyo (Joy) all practiced the typical Indonesian tradition of "ngaret" meaning rubber time (where an 11AM committment might be stretched to start at 11.45AM instead, usually accompanied by the automatic excuse "stuck in traffic jam." Rendy arrived with a frown after having S$xxxx worth of prized ranchus devoured by his ex-favorite dog the previous night. Maris arrived looking everybit like the man he is: constructing his first pond (50T including filter) and money in his pocket to add to his initial collection. Rullysim brought his beautiful family and also curry puffs. Soelistyo brought a measuring tub so none of us would have to bear witness to luckyl's scientific method of measuring koi using his fingers. Luckyl's indoor pond is around 6T (is it right, luckyl?) excluding filter. He has about 14 koi, mainly tosai kohaku offsring of Eagle/Bentley from Momotaro. the biggest fish was a Sakai and a Hoshikin kohakus around 60cm, while the tosais were around 36-40cm. Luckyl also had a magoi hybrid kohaku which had grown from 25+cm to 45cm in barely 6 months. After the pond visit, Luckyl invited everyone to lunch at a nearby restaurant none of us had tried before including Luckyl himself. The food wasn't the best but Luckyl pre-empted any potential complaints by picking up the check once the waitress brought it over. Everyone other than Luckyl thus agreed that the restaurant was actually not bad at all, at least in terms of cost-performance, since the cost was zero rupiah to our pockets. Thanks again Luckyl. From the restaurant, we made our way to GoldenKoi, the largest dealer in Jakarta, specializing in Sakai fish. what should have been a 15 minute drive ended up an hour long, as traffic congestion was surprisingly bad for a Saturday. Nobody seemed to mind too much, though, except maybe for Luckyl and Maris who drove their own cars while Rully smartly had his chauffer along and Rendy / Soelistyo were also wise enough to leave their cars at home and hitched a ride off Maris. At GoldenKoi, what was intended as a "just looking" excercise inevitably ended up as a koi-buying expedition. Culprit being Rendy, who started the ball rolling by picking up a beautiful tosai shiro from Sakai's last auction. A purchase made allegedly to cheer himself up after the demise of his beloved ranchus. The rest of us didn't need such logical excuses to follow suit. Maris, encouraged at the remarkable progress made by a small auction showa he had purchased the week before, followed by helping himself to a tategoi auction shiro. Luckyl, Rullysim, and Soelistyo at that point were still strongly resisting the evil tempations to buy, preferring instead to stand and admire a few pieces of 25cm auction tosai kohakus priced at a whopping Rp25million (RM11,000) apiece. Upon hearing that the koi were in fact sold fishes, the 3 of us started going "Sold? oooh d@mn! that's too bad!" as if we would actually contemplate facing divorce proceedings from our wives in exchange for splurging on those koi. Then somebody (i think Maris) started looking at a pond of tosai kohakus 20cm+ which were Benihanako offsprings. Rendy had previously bought a few pieces from that pond which had progressed very well at his place, growing from a meager 16-18cm to 30+cm in 3 months. Not wanting to miss out on Rendy's good experience, everyone started pointing at fish from that pond to be netted by GoldenKoi's staff. The original plan was to buy 1 each, after negotiating a good collective price for 5 pieces from Wiwi (GoldenKoi owner). Wiwi had offered to give 1 fish free for 5 purchased, and he suggested to hold a lottery to see who'd get the free piece. Sensing the danger that WorldWarIII might very possibly start as a result of 4 koi-crazed hobbyists feeling unhappy at losing out on a free small koi to 1 lucky lottery winner, Soelistyo asked Wiwi to simply give us 1 free piece for 4 purchased, so we that we could simply divide the cost of the fish per piece and everybody thus gained. This was met by a collective "Setuju" (I agree) from the participants. Who says learning Mathematics in Primary School was a waste of time? So everybody picked a fish, except for Rendy who already had 3 from that batch. Soelistyo agreed to buy 2 so we could keep our deal with Wiwi, but in the end it wasn't really necessary as Maris helped himself to 3. Thus the final total was 7 fish (3 for Maris, 2 for Soelistyo, and 1 each for Luckyl and Rullysim). Sorry i didn't take a pic of the koi we selected, but perhaps somebody else did? if yes please post them here. Anyway, Luckyl chose a nice one step with slight inazuma, Rully took the one with the biggest body/head (now we know his priorities hehe), Soelistyo chose 2 with good skin, and Maris used his patented method of selecting fish i.e they must either have a very interesting pattern, or they must be fish that has been rejected so many times by other members that he felt sorry for it. The time flew by and soon it was near 5PM and Rullysim's wife was tired of waiting in the car and sent his kids over to pull him away from the ponds. Luckyl's mobile phone kept ringing and from a distance of 100 metres we could clearly hear a lady's voice over the phone instructing him to return home pronto as our friend patiently nodded and told said "yes, dear, soon, dear. No of course I didn't buy any more koi, darling, don't worry." Maris, Rendy, and Soelistyo meanwhile were late for their next appointment to another koi dealer for photo taking of a superb Murakami sansai kohaku that Maris had paid RMxx,xxx for a couple of days earlier. So we left all the purchased koi to Wiwi for picking up maybe a week later. All in all it was great to finally start the pond visit ritual. Rendy has kindly volunteered to host the next one after the Lunar New Year, where we'll get to see his new 25T pond filled with nice tosai. Cheers everybody! Joy (Soelistyo)
