4th time around Can't Post

Ok! This is the fourth time Im rebuilding my pond
and hopefully the last too. Started koi keeping
officially 3 years ago and I have learned a lot,
from building my first pond with no filters at all
(never heard of biological filter before, LOL) No
wonder my fish we're dying. lol

And now I hope to grow beautiful nishikigoi.
Thanks to this site I have learned a lot and
constantly learning. Koi keeping is a never
ending way of improving your koi keeping skills.

A little about my pond.

*The filter area is going to be around 70% to 80%
surface area of my pond. ( not including my
Trickle tower which will be added in the future)
* The filter system is 3 feet deep.
* The pond is 6 feet deep.
* 2 bottom drains, using 4" pvc pipe
* 2 mechanical chambers
* 5 bioligical chambers
* 2 dry chambers for discharge piping.
* Pond is 20 feet long, biological filter is also 20 feet long. Mechanical filter is 7 feet long.
* Surface skimmer will be included.
* Mid water return will also be included.

Total gallonage of the pond? I dont know for sure.
rough estimate...5,000 gallons for the pond and 2,000 gallons for the filter system alone.

please feel free to give me ideas, guys.

pictures will be posted regularly for updates..hehehehe

good luck mikoi! hope your 4th and hopefully final revision goes well:) The only thing i wish i did differently with my filter chamber was to make to flooring as steep as possible to aid in the backwashing of the chamber. Mine had a slope of 12" at 1 meter but i wish i made it more.

hi mikoi,

always glad to help a fellow ponder. These are just my opinions so feel free to ignore them:)

1. there are actuated ball valves that can be remotely controlled so you can use these instead of standpipes.
2. i prefer two smaller pumps that 1 big one for backup.
3. bottom drains in parallel and not in series.
4. the cover of the uv chamber (if shine on uv) should slope so that no water gets stuck to the cover and spills when you have to open the cover for some reason.
5. if above ground have a overflow. usually first chamber so that dirtiest water goes out.
6. rounded edges for the pond
7. if using "blacknet" have a prefabricated tray made where you can place the nets. Makes it easier than the pvc pipes that you wedge in
8. a pvc pipe when you can thread the airlines to the filter chamber makes it neater as well as more durable i think than just letting the airlines run.
9. you can have a water outlet in your discharge chamber(if above ground) so that you dont need to use submersible to pump out water unless you want to completely empty it. I prefer pumping it to the garden rather than piping it to drainage.
10. dont forget the pvc sizes as they are important for proper flow. Not too fast but also should supply enough water. There is a max volume per inside diameter of pvc pipes. Also, i dont know how effective this is but i have more transport pipes than inlet pipes from bottom drain to slow down the flow of water some in the filter if this makes sense.

thats about it but im sure a lot more people who have better ideas will chime in soon. Good luck.

1. there are actuated ball valves that can be remotely controlled so you can use these instead of standpipes.

Sounds very expensive. and I have read about the pull out pipes which leaks
in the long run. pull out pipes are cheaper and easier to use. ball valves are more
expensive and you have to go down, lay down or kneel down to turn it on and off.
do you have pictures of the actuated ball valves by any chance?

2. i prefer two smaller pumps that 1 big one for backup.

Got that one down.

3. bottom drains in parallel and not in series

Got that one down

4. the cover of the uv chamber (if shine on uv) should slope so that no water gets stuck to the cover and spills when you have to open the cover for some reason.

I have an old UV light here. but its not shine on. (hopefully with my filter size I wont be
using any UV at all.

5. if above ground have a overflow. usually first chamber so that dirtiest water goes out.

Great Idea on the above ground overflow. Maybe I will do that on the first chamber which
is the settlement and brushes chamber.

6. rounded edges for the pond

Got that one down.

7. if using "blacknet" have a prefabricated tray made where you can place the nets. Makes it easier than the pvc pipes that you wedge in.

What is a "blacknet" for? I mean I know what a black net is, I think! this are used to cover orchids or plants to protect from direct sunlight, right? where does the blacknet goes? inside the filter? please tell me more about the blacknets.

8. a pvc pipe when you can thread the airlines to the filter chamber makes it neater as well as more durable i think than just letting the airlines run.

Great Idea. Can you take pictures of the inside of your filter system so I can make
copya...hehehehe

9. you can have a water outlet in your discharge chamber(if above ground) so that you dont need to use submersible to pump out water unless you want to completely empty it. I prefer pumping it to the garden rather than piping it to drainage.

My filter system and discharge chamber is not above ground so I will be needing a
submersible pump to pump out water from the discharge chamber going to the sewer
pipe.

10. dont forget the pvc sizes as they are important for proper flow. Not too fast but also should supply enough water. There is a max volume per inside diameter of pvc pipes. Also, i dont know how effective this is but i have more transport pipes than inlet pipes from bottom drain to slow down the flow of water some in the filter if this makes sense.

Yes. thank you for reminding me that. The size of the pvc is very important.
I will be using mostly 4" pvc pipes. From the bottom drains and mechanical
chamber going to the bio filters, I will be using 4" pvc pipes. the only 2" pvc
pipes im going to be using is for the discharge pipes for each chambers.

Now, what is "not too fast" water flow pipe size you think I should
use? A 4" pvc pipe, ok?

Thanks Longlong

mikoi,

1. the ball valves i saw it from our factory's intrumentation supplier. It a ballvalve that comes with a control mechanism that you can operate remotely so you dont have to manually pull the standpipes. You can just click on the control panel and choose what valve to open. Some brands that should have it would be siemens, yokogawa, honeywell etc.

4. I hope you are succesful in keeping apond clear without uv here in our climate. Please let me know the results as it would be nice to follow:)

7. i use blacknet for my filter media. What are you gonna be using? Im guessing j matts? matala sounded promising but i couldnt find a local dealer.

8. no camera now. Its actually just for the airlines to be kept together. Comes out like a housing for all airhoses.

9. 4" should be fine as 6" pvc might collect debris already due to slower flow. For mine i have three 4 " pipes from three bottom drain to the first chamber and four 4 " transfer pipes going to next chambers.

BTW use stainless everything if you can. I had to replace my hinges to the cover today:(

hey longlong.

the remote control valves are expensive. forget it...heheheh

I have been using the blue matala mats and from my experience
they are ok. matala mat's floats, unlike the japanese mats it
stays in the bottom of your filter.

I have a supplier here that sells matala mats. if you are interested
let me know, ok.

your filter media " black net" is this the same net where you can buy it
anywhere?

will keep you updated regularly with pics.

Filter Chamber discharge pipe lines.
each chamber has their own individual
discharge pipelines as you can see from

This is the discharge chamber from the filter chambers.
some people call it the "dry chamber". this is where
you pull out the pipes individually and then a submersible
pump is used to suck out the water to the sewer.

well.....it's not quite done....The stand pipes are not
placed, no submersible pump nor the walls for the
individual chambers are up yet....but you get the picture, right?Tongue

Mid water return.

I installed a 2" pvc pipe for Mid water return.
UK koi keepers puts 1 on each side of the pond to push
down the dirt to the bottom of the pond and create extra water circulation.
But for my pond I dont know the purpose except its an extra Tongue

then 1 week for curing the pond. I hope that is
enough time.

any ideas to cure a pond the express way
besides scrubbing the walls with pineapple
chunks and vinegar?

They are using the infamous "VULCA SEAL" ..... lol

they are using " FED SEAL" elastomeric sealant.
they apply inside the tube and also outside.

Hi Mikoi,

Since you're not rushing, if I were you I'll let the concrete cure properly then treated before applying any sealant. This will make the sealant adhere stronger. Don't rush............beleive me I know what I'm talking aboutPirateWink

Cifu John!

I need your help on this one.

HOW DO I TREAT MY POND?

I know that there are chemicals from the
fresh cement which is very dangerous for
kois.

I scrub the inside of the pond with vinegar
and pineapple husks, leave the water there
for a week and let the pump run, then drain.
then put in new water then... capish?

please tell me your way of doing it. Smile

Thanks :)Smile

Hi Mikoi,

I can't remember the name of the chemical to treat the concrete. But you can still use it coz after that you'll be cleaning with vinegar and pineapple husks then sealing the pond. Once you sealed the pond and dried properly you can use PP to treat the pond. After that fill it up check PH then get yourself some suicide squad to test the pond for you and leave tham for a week. If they survived I'd say your new pond is ready and start introducing a few koi every two days. Only feed few pellets per day to kick start your biofilter and to avoid ammonia spikeSmile

Good luckWink
