Do kois need to be put out under the sun? Can't Post

Hello hobbyists!

A puzzling topic. Do kois really need to be put out under the sun to enhance

or maintain a dark (whether hi/sumi/etc) color?

There are indoor ponds, if it is true that kois need the sun's rays, how do these kois fare?

If you happen to have read a topic such as this in this forum, please lead me to it.

Need some good insights and with basis thoughts on this.

Thanks.

sunligth is important to the koi pond, bec sunligth is a good source of spirulina algae.Smile

Spirulina algae -This has an above average carotenoid content that is easily assimilated, being found in very simple algae cells good source of food for koi to develop and improve the colour of each colour cell.Smile

Just like us, sunlight is good in moderation. The morning sun is good for koi and for the water etc. However too much direct exposure, like the harsh afternoon sun especially with a pond with crystal clear water, just like us the koi will get sunburned. Thats why outdoor ponds are shaded. However the sun is not a necessity in my opinion. Lots of people have successfully kept koi in indoor ponds with little to no sun exposure at all. As long as the water is good, thats all that matters.

let me explain to u...Smile

Most of the animals that live on earth need sunlight in some way, either indirectly or directly. Koi need sunlight in both ways. Be it in the plants they eat or for their color pigments that they produce!Smile

Natural sunlight brightens a Koi’s colors. This is most evident with the Yamabuki Ogon. If a Yamabuki Ogon is kept in an indoor tank with only regular lighting, its yellow color will fade. But, if the Yamabuki Ogon is put in an outdoor pond, its color will return within a couple months. The same applies for Kohakus, Sankes, Showas ect!Smile

Koi actually look better in natural sunlight too. There’s something about the broad spectrum of light that the sun produces that brings out the natural beauty of Koi. A good way to see this example yourself is to take two pictures. Take one of a Koi when it’s indoors under a regular light and one of a Koi outside on a nice sunny day. Compare the two photos and it’s easy to tell which one looks better!Smile

Natural sunlight also makes Koi healthier. The sun will warm the water up and will also boost a Koi’s immune system. Humans get vitamin D from the sun, fish do not. They must get it from plants or the small organisms that they eat. Vitamin D is essential for good growth and strong bones!Smile

Natural sunlight is also beneficial to aquatic plants too. Aquatic plants require sunlight for photosynthesis, which is the process that a plant uses in order to make food and oxygen!Smile
