Koi's from Bio Research Can't Post

I went bio research in Paranaque today and they are selling small kois ( around 5inches ) there. The price ranges from 900 pesos to 1,500 each. Are bio koi's good quality kois or are they crap?

Hi Armand

I assume your pond is already done coz your looking for koi already. Ask them where the fish come from and how old are they (I think they are 3-4 mos old though) and who is the breeder. I dont know much about the koi quality of bio research but maybe Mike (aragorn) can help you coz he has purchased some of his koi there. You can also fo to kois and ponds and look for Michael (dreamkoi) he can give you quality koi coz he's a members of the koi club and you better fill up the membership form i send you coz club members have discounts on his shop.Cool Do post some pix of your pond for us to view.

Thanks
Hindley

Hello Armand,
It is important to know the origin of your koi, for you will be keeping them for quite a while. Recently, there are ads in animal scene from KOI888. The owner claims he is the supplier of koi to bio research. You will seldom find a good koi in bio research. I usually pass by their Sucat branch and will notice a lot of parasites and fishes have stunted growth. Sorry about that -- it's because they have poor feeding and water management program. Try to compare them with kois and ponds. I believe you'll see the difference. GOOD LUCK.

hi davidb, im also a newbie in this hobby and haven't got any koi yet but planning to construct my own pond this weekend. as i surf in the forum, i often see kois & pond name and i'm also familiar with its branch in catimar (?).. just want to ask how much would a koi cost about 5~6 inches long? i mean not the hi-end breed ones but only for the beginners like me.. i'm not new in the aqua hobby for i keep frontosas in my aquarium but thought that kois are more exciting and fun.. btw, im from laguna.. do you guys know anybody from my end? thanks. -alain

Thanks & regards,

Alain

Re: [abasbas] Koi's from Bio Research [In reply to] Can't Post

hi David. Im glad to know there is someone from laguna. I am also from the south in Alabang. where in laguna are you? you should come and visit me here since im having my pond built. its almost done and I followed the instruction form the guys here from the forum. Thanks to Hinz, Aragon and Bran.... I followed HInz filter chambers and listened to Bran and Aragon to put a bottom drain and skimmer. ( thanks guys)
Are you installing a bottom drain? make sure you do it the right time, the first time. I learned my lessons the hard way but its not too late, and im very happy to have stumbled into this forum, its a big help.
We laso have a club here, you should join. just ask the guys around :)

As far as koi. I would recommend just going to cartimar and buy some local koi's for your tester fish (new koi pond) you dont want to put those beautiful koi from koi's and pond...not just yet.

koi's in bio research are so ridicoulusly (spelling) expensive and im sorry those 2,000 peso koi's they are selling only goes for 300 pesos in cartimar.
just dont be in a hurry to get the fish, make sure you get your pond correct. just my advice :)

here ya go Hinz. nothing spectacular. I tried to do fiberglassing in my pond, I dont know if the guys did the job right but at this point cant do anything about it. oh well....i should have just sticked with a pond liner. also I made a hug ass settlement chamber, I dont know if that is a good idea or not, but its deeper than the pond and with 4 filter chambers.

hello mikey

it looks great already. how deep is your pond? 2' or 3'? are you going to paint your pond? looks to me that your filter chambers is just too small. can you take pix of your settlement chamber. what kind of filter media would you be using? and how many pumps do you intend to run your pond?

Hi hinz

The pond is 26 inches deep. and no, Im not going to paint it, I would just do what I did with my old pond, let it turn green on the bottom and on the sides.

you think my filter chamber is just too small? maybe its just the pics, sometimes it can be deceiving thou. but now im starting to worry, maybe it is small. hehehe.. anyways Im not good with numbers so I dont know how big or deep the settlement chamber is, but, let me assure you its BIG . I think I could even hide inside and im a tall guy ( 5'11 )

as for filter media im going to get brushes at koi's n ponds for the first chamber ( mechanical filter) do you know any alternatives to brushes? I need your advice on that.
and I will just use my existing japanese mats and matala mats as bio filter. it is in a seperate tank with aeration to keep the good bugs alive ( I think they are still alive)
pump? I will just be using 1 submersible pump which will be put in the last chamber together with a sack of zeolite. I do have 2 more back up pumps on stand by.
Hinz? can you please tell me more about oyster shells for buffering your ph. where can I buy them and does it really work? give me ideas what I should use for filter media... especially for the mechanical filter...help!

is flocor used for mechanical filter? dont know anything about it and I dont think its available here..hhmmm..

hello mikey

this is what dttk advise me when i was still working with my pond. as your pond is concrete you need not add any shells, there will be enough lime to supply carbonate ions to buffer your water for many years.

you can use any filter media that you can think of but filter brushes are better. you can also substitute flocor for corrogated plastic tubes that are used for electrical wirings, but i think this has only little surface area compared to fish nets. my filter media consist of fish nets and pot scrubs and it did the job i also erated all my filter media. but if you can always go for the brushes.

did you make a dry sump for your filter chambers? let the pond run for about a week before putting in fish.

Hi hinz...geez you make my head spin. I dont know some of the things you are talking about . oohhh the pain of a newbie koi enthusiast.
since my pond is concrete I dont need to add shells since there is enough lime to supply carbonate ions to buffer my water.....eck! I dont understand hahahaha....does that mean I dont have to scrub my pond with vinegar or pineapple skin to neutralize the poison of the cement since its new pond?

what is a dry sump chamber?? Im totally lost on this one.

pot scrub? you mean those things you buy in the grocery to scrub and clean cooking pots?

and yes, I will be aerating all my bio filter :)

it is so funny reading the forums about the new pond syndrome. people put all kinds of things in their pond with the fish IN it, vinegar, baking soda, baking powder, pineapple, salt, etc and end up killing their fish, its just so funny.

also Im afraid to when to put my fish back in the pond. Im thinking about waiting for a whole month and wait for the bacteria to grow back, BUT, if there is no fish, then there is no amonia, and you need amonia to begin the cycle of the good bacteria, right? please enlighten me on this one

Re: [mikoi] here ya go. [In reply to] Can't Post

the main purpose of letting the pond run for a while is to check if there some things that might go wrong, without having to move the fish again when they are already in the pond.

you should rinse the pond first before filling with water.

you should rinse - let sun - rinse - let sun
before filling it up, then run it for a while ... then replace all the water again

so, you are right, no ammonia = no cycle. but thats not the purpose of this anyway.

p.s. i didnt hear you mention waterproofing ... make sure you watch for leaks (especially where the pipes go in and out of the pond)

hello mikey

hehehehe to make it simple you dont need shells for now to buffer ph, thats it. you can still scrub your pond before putting in water and rinse it well until water is clear. mike is right you should follow his steps before putting in your fish. what i did with my pond was scrub the whole pond including the filter chambers, rinse it until water was clear, fill it up with water and let the filter run for about a week, drain the whole water and fill it up again and waited for 3 days before putting in fish. before you put in your kois buy a test fish and let it stay there for 24 hrs. when everything is fine start putting one fish every week. feed it lightly until 6-8 weeks wait for the filter to be mature enough.

now for the dry sump. you have a drain for each filter chamber right? where will this drains go? if you dont have drain for each chamber it would be very frustrating cleaning the chambers when they are full of fish poop.

dont worry so much bout your filter media since you have erated it. although some of the bacteria will die there will still be some left to kick start your filter chambers on your pond.

Hello to all. New here. I host a month old tank for five 3" kois all of which were bought at bio research (festival alabang and sm southmall branches). I'm sure that bio research kois are not generally show quality compared to others, but are interesting enough stock for pets.

Although, the festival mall branch of bio research showcased this marvelous 2 1/2 feet koi, the price tag on which I was too intimitated to ask but probably would go through the roof. :p

I agree with you Emo not everyone can enjoy buying expensive show quality kois. There are a lot of koi lovers out there but with very limited amount of budget.
