Need Advice on Algae Can't Post

Guys I need advice for my pond.....

I have a ten ton pond(inc Filter) that has around 18 Koi(just gave away ten not so nice koi due to overstocking). Around ten are mature and the others are 8 inches or more. anyway, my pond is suffering from algae in the pond itself. I don't have green water but it is some string algae variety that is attached to the sides of the pond. My problem is that the Koi keep on nipping on it and some of this float into the water. My water is still good. I can still see a coin dropped to the bottom clearly which is 4.2 feet deep. I use a UV lamp placed in the filtration and it seems to be doing a good job. My sunlight exposure is 12 hours or so but half the time is semi shaded by the local lambats that can be bought going to batangas. I already did a water change and am close to having ideal water aesthetically speaking.

I am tempted to buy those chemical treatments they sell but I still haven't studied it enough to say it is safe for the fish. Should I let it be as it is? I am sure this isn't harmful to the Koi, it's only a pebble in the shoe so to speak but lately I have given a lot of time to the pond and a perfect one would be gratifying.....Blush

comments would be very welcome, thanks

Hey Betsymax.

I dont know what I can say to help your
predicament, but, I can surely say that it sure
is a rare situation to have string algea in our very
hot climate. its usually green water that koi keepers
worry about.

my only advice is to remove them manually,
which is a pain to do.

thanks for the input.

I'm not even sure if it is string algae is what they call it but its the green slimey stuff surrounding the inner pond. One solution for sure would be to dry dock the pond for a couple of days but i don't have a large quarantine tank to hold all my koi. and pond number 2 hasn't even been constructed. Frown
soon i guess.

betsymax,

If this algae is about 10mm long or smaller I wouldn't worry about it as koi wull much on them and also a sign of a good balance pond. But if they are isang dankal then use toilet brush, much easier than pulling by handSmile

hi koi38, yes its the 10mm type of greenies.

its only when they munch i get a little "o.c." bec it spreads a while before it passes thru the bottom drain.

thanks for the input.

thanks.

will it follow if i cover the pond with a roof this carpet algae will lessen? or should i look into lessening the nitrates?
i don't wanna eradicate this type of algae bec i feel it gives my Koi vivid color esp the hi. i think it works like spirulina, the color enhancers that i totally don't need as of the moment.

oh and next question, how do i quarantine plants? or at least ensure thatit doesn't bring anything bad in the pond.

tthanks in advance,

pedro

I soak the plants in PP for atleast 5 minutes.
that should do it.

I got a bunch of plants form my parent's pond
before and didnt quarantine the plants. after 3 days
the whole pond was invaded by flying saucers or what
you call the " Argulus". fish we're flashing and had to
treat the whole pond.

So I learned my lesson to treat the plants rather
than treating the whole pond.

YUP! PP......potassium permanganate

I saw Koi Village sell them in small quantities.
I dont know exactly how much but should be
around 200 pesos.

Koi Village has some good medicinal stuff in
small packages and quantities like:

NEGUVON = its almost like dimilin (I always make sure I have this stuff )
PP
powdered methalyne blue

etc etc....

You don't want to eradicate this type of algae. They do help balancing your pond biological environment and very good source of food for your koi. They also house good bacteria. Try not to cover your entire pond. Your koi do need sunlight to improve their hiSmile

got it thanks.

oh and another question..... I'm sure that you guys have some koi that you didn't want anymore.... what did you do with them?

Build another pond, give them away, let them be?

i'm thinking of lessening my load by half so i can feed more and for sure it will naturally give more space for the others to grow

I wanna have around 10 only. but 10 classy ones. the ones i can't afford. haha. Angelic

What's the point of building another pond for some koi you don't wantCrazy IMHOTongue I gave some of my koi to some good home, some were sold and I still need more space so maybe auction is another optionWink

If no takers and desperate for space you can always put them to sleep which the humane thing to doSmile

sure mikoi by all means. but they really arent that nice. i have 5 small ones and 3 big ones(formerly 5 big-2died) in a 75 gallon tank. i have to change water every other day and i feed them once in 3 days so as not to make things worse for them, 2 died already. i have 3 more that i want out of my pond but thats another story and i'll wait til i egt new ones before i rid them.

but again, it's really not that nice. just find them a home and i'll be happy

mikoi: why next month pa? just get them before they die from overcrowding. I'm converting the aquarium to a marine reef. i'm just from the south too and if you have a BF sticker then it wouldn't even take you ten mins to get here from ATC. Wink

rickb: yes i tried before but i really dont trust that fish with my koi bec they're too scaley. Smile

i want an all koi and an additional fish would mean an additional mouth to feed in terms of food, aeration, filtration, etc. but thanks for the idea.

Betsymax, where do you live? im 10 mins
away from ATC.

Also I think they have abolished the stickers
to get into BF PAranaque (Toyota Alabang)
so I can get in with no problem..ata, not sure.

.....well....the reason I cant get them
is because my pond is not done yet. Tongue
