Alain,

The most important thing in Koi keeping is filtration. Make sure that the system in your pond works to ensure a supply of good clean water which is the most essential factor in Koi keeping. Get the suggestions of the experts like Mike of Kois and Ponds to make sure that your pond's filtration is correct. The important things to remember are bottom drain, settlement filter, biological filter, UV light and you will be ok.

Alain,

I suggest that you consult Mike and some other guys who are experts with pond filtration before starting your pond. It might cost a little more but in the long run it will be cheaper, trust me. i tried to do my pond on my own with the help of a non-expert and I ended up re-doing anything, thereby spending almost double. That was a very painful lesson, I hope you wouldn't do the same mistake that I went through.

Re: [KoiKichi] Newbie in Koi Hobby [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jay-V, I really wanted to meet some experts here but unfortunately I've started construction of my pond last weekend. Although I'm a newbie in the pond hobby but I have some experience in fish keeping though, I currently have a 180-gal tank filled with Frontosas and was keeping it for 4 years already. I know this is entirely different but the basics on fish keeping is there.. I managed to had my pond designed after some of the designs I found on the web. Although it is not as exact as they presented it but I tried copying the intent. I think what I missed is the settling chamber but I considered putting a mechanical and a biological filter (trickle tower) including the pond drains. Thanks for the info. Wish me luck!

Thanks & regards,

Alain

Alain,

Just don't forget to have a bottom drain installed in your pond, it should trap all the wastes of the kois so that they can pass thru the mechanical or settlement filter(brushes), then to the biological(mats), and the last stage would be the UV chamber before going back to the pond as clean water.

Hi Hindley! Sure, I'll try to post some pics tomorrow when I get my hands on my digicam. I'm really excited in meeting Mike and all the koi enthusiast but I live quite far from manila and my work finishes around 6:30pm but one of these day I will surely go there. How about you, where do you live? Actually, I'm looking for some guys who live nearby my area so I can pay them a visit and talk somethings about kois and also to benchmark their ponds.. Smile

Thanks & regards,

Alain

Yes, 2 + 3 are Sanke.

4 = Aka Chagoi.

1 = Doitsu Hariwake.

we undestand there are some differences between Eastern version + Western version.

Anymore version?

Re: [rickb888] Newbie in Koi Hobby [In reply to] Can't Post

hola Rick!

the reaosn I have to give away 10 kois is because they are growing very fast in my pond. from 3 months I would see a 10 inch grow to 14 and they get really fat and juicy hahaha. im down to 20 kois and still feel crowded because they turn to water hogs.

I cant believe these monsters grow fast, I must be doing something right.

I bought a chagoi, ochiba and a magoi from kois and ponds. I bought them (april 2005) at 12 cm (5 inches) and I swear I just measured those monsters and they are now over 25 cm (10 inches) thats at 3 months only.

I can take pics of my kois but remember these are locally bred from pampanga. But I do have some from kois and ponds but still small.

also we can go take a trip down to pampanga ( has to be on a sunday, to avoid nightmare traffic) and take a look there. and im not talking about KOI888, I heard its very expensive there. but of course, you get what you pay for.
