UV and green water Can't Post

Hi Guys,

I need your expert advice , when my pond was fairly new i had a 36W UV unit my pond is only 1,500 gallons . it went well after for a few months. now after cleaning my pond it takes 4 days and the water is starting to turn green Unsure. DO you think I should replace the UV lamp or just replace the whole unit ( I'm using ATman 36w - I think its China brand) ?

or it is normal after 6 months you have to replace the lamp ? can you guys recommend a better brand and rating based on 1,500 gallons .

My UV runs from the pump then straight thru the falls but the not all of the water passes thru the UV only partial. I had a friend who had a UV unit but had a separate pump to pass thru the UV instead of passing thru the filter pump.

Need your help guys ! Unsure

20 watts is fine for your 1500 gallons.

UV lights are rated for 1 year of use (i think) so its possible you need to change the light.
you can change UV brand if the replacement light is almost as expensive as a new UV unit.

i personally use "sera" brand which i bought from petzone banawe branch.
mine is 30w (forgot how much, you can search this forum as im sure i posted it somewhere here) ive been using mine for 1 year and 3 mos. and it still works. (still lights up, but im not sure if its still killing algae) im actually waiting for the UV light to go out, and i might not use it anymore.

Re: [rickb888] UV and green water [In reply to] Can't Post

yes, no more UV.

a UV is not part of the requirements for a pond ... in fact, a UV hides problems in your filtration system and/or your overfeeding.

with proper filtration, aeration and water changes ... you do not need a UV.
i have another pond with few fishes and with very little feeding, i dont even change the water (except for rains) and its still crystal clear

what is your filtration system? do you have a separate mechanical and biological filtration? how big is your filter?

Hi Mike,

2/3 is very big, what is needed is only 1/3

what is your mechanical filtration?

do you aerate your biofiltration?
what is your biomedia?

how many fish do you have? how big?

how much do you feed per day? (weight)

Re: [rickb888] UV and green water [In reply to] Can't Post

wow! 36 watts for a 1500 gallon pond!
we have the same pond gallon, but I only use 9 watts UV. when my pond was brand new it was turning into green water (new pond syndrome) and after installing a 9 watts uv light, it only took 3 days to turn it crystal clear.

please check your flow rate going thru the UV. if its very fast and strong, then its useless. try installing a low wattage pump.

hope this helps

Hi guys,

sorry less then 1/3 not 2/3. for mechanical filtration I use brushes then next chamber jap mats , thats it . I do aerate my chambers .

I have like close to 50 kois mostly around 7 inches long ( i know its too many) and some goldfish ( i already had 6 lionheads killed by my kois)

I only feed them in the morning

I guess the flow is too strong, I think i shoudl have a separate pump for the UV

Re: [rickb888] UV and green water [In reply to] Can't Post

my 30w UV is rated for a flow of NOT MORE than 1000gph.

i agree, you should clean the mechanical filters more often ... at least once a week and an ideal of twice a week

also, it is better to feed more often with little amounts than one big feeding, because the filter wont be able to handle too much food at the same time

Hi Guys,

I clean my mechanical filter once a month Wink , thanks for the feedback , I guess I'll just reduce the flow to the UV liek you said much cheaper option

sir mike, 160 gallon or lesser pa ata lang ang pond ko...6x3x14....Ur is 1500 gallons right? so Is there any Uv light sold na masbababa ang wattage?
Where do i install the UV light? pwede ba sa over head filter or my biological filter? will it really help to make my green water clear? kahit di crystal clear, basta makita ko lang ang ilalaim ng pond ko....

Does this work really?
And Is there any bacteria for ponds sold here in pinas that will help my biological filter??

thanks

Re: [opsul] UV and green water [In reply to] Can't Post

the problem is, I have no idea where to place the Uv light....The only place i can install the UV light where ther is a stream flow is on top of my biological filter. wala kasi akong settlement area kasi. My biological filter is a bin type( aka balde) . I think putting a UV light there would make my biological filter useless as it will kill the bacteria that i should be growing with it...tama ba? But if the UV light would solve my green water problem, I could sacrifice the biological aspect of my BIn"balde" .....

Where can i buy one pala???

hello jay

welcome to the forum. yes there are bacteria for sale at pet shops to jump start your bio filter. UV lite should be placed after your filter chambers in that way it will not kill the good guys (bacteria). i dont have UV installed on my pond coz i have constructed a plastic roofing above it. nice pond btw, if you want your filtration chambers hidden you can construct it where your grasses are or you can have those blue barrels like mike have and place it at the side of your house just like john did with his trickle tower. keep us posted on your ponds development.

Re: [hinz101] UV and green water [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Hinz!!! Im tryng to be more patient about my pond.I have to admit, Me and my dad never really designed it effectively with the filters etc. I guess this is the common mistake of newbies like me. If the UV really works, i guess i'll have to go in that direction, the UV way. Im tryng to be patient about my pond...but given a choice I want to get it over with and stop worrying about it everyday. Nagrereklamo na ang wife ko since i spent almost the entire day looking at it and making adjustment than spend time with her. I just want to relax...I think thats one of the good aspects of koi keeping. It helps me forget my tons of prolems..pero lalong dumadagdag.

Maybe you can attach some picture sof your pond....
By the way, youre from cebu right> was there 2 months ago to learn baking from my tita. Are you near Sto.nino village? laki ng pagbabago sa cebu. It was practically 10 years since i went there again. dati puno talahib lang makikita mu at raming nagbebenta ng japanese sweetcorn sa tabi. And my favorite restaurant of all tim, ding kwakwa(did I spell it right?) To my surprise, they changed their concept from a roving food carts where you just get what you want to a fastfood type, they even changed their name to dimsum express. Cebu is really great!!!!!!!!!

hope to hear from you soon!! jay

ey jay

that would be likely the situation when you spend more time with your kois rather than your wife, i was in that situation before but now she understands and she supports me all the way with my hobby.

my pond pix are in pond section but ill post it here for you so that the other filipino koi newbies can find it easily. yep im from cebu and we are very near sto nino village we are located just right in front of ma luisa village. cebu is really booming pati traffic boom na boom naCrazy. yeah i know aht you mean, now yun bintahan ng sweetcorn ay mall na ngayon, even the vacant lot accross it is now a school and the other vacant lot beside it is also being converted into another mall. i dont know if its done already coz when i left its was still underconstruction. ding quaqua, their food is delicious they are still located in uptown though we even have our wedding reception held there before it was renovated. i dont know why they change the name but the food still taste the same.

yaahteeh (hello in indian language)

im currently in new mexico right now jay. just give your uv a little more time it will work. follow the other members advise too like less feeding and dont add anymore fish becoz your filtration cant cope up with the fish waste. i was planning na to have a pond here pro wala pang budget ang mahal ng labor dito.

my pond is already a year old, i dont have any pix updates of it yet. but when your in cebu tell me and ill let you see my pond para you can have a general idea on what i did. before i have my concrete pond, im just like you. i keep looking for some improvements on my pond every day. ang laki na ng nagasto ko before i finally decided to have it concretePirate. i dont have any other pond, the one that you see is the temporary holding tank made of trapalCrazy. i have two of those and i gave it all away to other members in cebu.

best regards
hinz
