hi canuck! what material are you thinking of using for your shower? I think those plastic crates you see for bakeries should work. If you want a stainless one then got o a foundry shop. It shouldnt be too hard there. I have a lot of foundry suppliers but unfortunately they are here in our province:) im sure you can supply the foundry shops witht he dimensions and have them do it all stainless steel:)

cheers,
long

Can you give me an idea as to how much a steel bakki trays would cost? the thing about plastic is if i drill holes the holes will eventually get clogged or if a drill big holes i'm afraid that the bottom will eventually break over time... plus they're ugly hehe. and the plastic bins used in industrial bakeries are still too small because the biggest bread bin i've worked with is roughly 3x2ft. My pond is 5500 gallons. Momotaro recommends that I use 4 trays filled with 250-300kgs of bacteria house. btw, i'm using plastic drawers as a diy bakki shower and i have to unclog once a month.

anyway, if you could give me a price range that would be great so i know if i'm getting overcharged or what. :D oh yeah, and the water is pre filtered and passes through a biochamber as well so the shower won't get very dirty water.

thanks again!

Hi,

I have a quotation in front of me from my stainless fabricator and they are suppose to be one of the cheapest.

ss rectangular bin with mesh bottom
dimension 106" x 12 " x 12 " (9 feet in length by 1 by 1). I was planning one long tray first
18 inch height stand
16 guage
1/6" diameter mesh bottom
1/2 diameter tubular stand with 1 inch brace

peso 17,000. yikes! I had to rethink my plan.

Lar,

thats not bad at all. I inquired about it myself
around last year and the guy quoted me for 10,000 php, but it was not really the finest material nor it was pretty looking either. I belive the guy was going to use soft bendable stainless steal for me.
I went to a aluminum door and wondow guy hehehe....so I guess thats not stainless steel but rather aluminum...yikes.

I found an ad in an industry magazine which featured a manufacturer of plastic bins... there's this one product that they call a chicken bin and it looks to be about perfect for my purposes. If it comes in black I wouldn't mind buying it. I'll post the web address when i get back to the office. I'm currently searching for their website so hopefully i can find them.

17k for a 9ft long trough? not bad since it's 16 gauge. I've worked out the volume of a bakki tray and have to measure the space i have to find out which dimensions would fit nicely in my pond area.

Thanks for the quote tang!

Well it's good that this forum is active again! Now let's post some pics of our beloved kois in longlong's thread!

canuck,

let me know about the plastic bin. hope it is 12 inch deep and 12 inch wide. length is not a major factor for me. I will probably cut out 70% of the bottom and insert a stainless mesh ( I dont think I want to go through the trouble of drilling holes). the rectangular flower pots I have seen are not big enough.

Hi Guys,

If you can get something like these then you don't need to drill at all. There's enough vents for air exchange.
These are for my DIY TT coming soonWink Its approx 81cmL x 51cmW x 42cmD.

Jon

Hi Longlong,

Yep. I got lucky on these trays I saw them when I was driving past a warehouse. They were selling this for $2AUSD each and I bought the whole lot. I wish they had more thoughSmile

No one sells BH media here because /kg is too expensive... way more expensive than bioballs. If you really want to buy BH media, you can email momotaro koi farms or copy paste this: http://www.momotaro-koi.org/english/news/bacteria.html

on your URL bar in your browser. As I recall, shipping 200-300kg of BH will cost you 30000 yen or about 15000 pesos add to that the cost of the media itself.

Alternatives you can use are cubed filter mats, bioballs or lavarock. I'll be using Lavarock and cubed filter mat for now since it's going to take a while to order lots of bioballs. Also take note that not all bioballs are created equally, there are some designs that have more surface area vs some that are the same size.

Hi canuckpuck,

Thanks for the reply. That is so true. In fact, I did email Keirin Ponds, the distributor of Momotaro in the US, and 10kgs (22lbs) will cost around $195 bucks! And thats aside from the shipping pa! :( Shipping via air freight would definitely kill me. However, shipping via sea might prove less expensive. Still, the media is still quite expensive though. The price you pay for "Far infra-red rays". If Superman were a filter media, I guess this would be it.

Ah well.

Incidentally, I saw a real Momotaro Bakki Showers system being used at Koi Village. They use it on the tank where they keep their P150,000 Koi's They used lava rocks as the media.
