Where to get priming pot?? Can't Post

Where can i buy priming pots here? The pump i'll be using will be a few inches above water level and i've read that a priming pot is necessary for this set up. Are there any alternatives for this or should i just go ahead and order the priming pots from the US?

Thanks guys.

hi canuckpuck... what brand of pump are you using? is it self priming? If not another option you can do is to install checkvalves are the inlet of the pvc so that when the pump stops the valve closes to retain the water presuure. The problem with checkvalves are when the covers get clogged with twigs, etc and preventing it to close properly...

Is it possible to site you pump same level as the water? This is what i did with my new pond and it sure is a lot easire to start and stop the pump:)

going to use 2 sequence 1/3hp 5800seq23 pumps. the pump will be sucking water from the bottom of a very well aerated biochamber with jap mat up to a set of bakki showers. will try to see if we can add some holes to the wall of that chamber. I noticed in a previous pic that your pumps are exposed to rain... there's no problem with rusting for you? Thanks.SmileSmileSmile

Hi Canuck,

Why don't you just DIY a priming pot instead of buying it installing a check valveCrazy

Don't know how....easyTongue If you look under your bathroom sink you should see a "J" or "U" shape pipe with inspection nut. The porpese of these is to clean the pipe if just in case it clogged. Now you can construct similar one to suit your pump. The only thing you do when you switch off your pump is to open the nut and add water until it overflow, then place back the nut. I'll try to find pics for your to give you some ideasSmile

so you're saying that i do an upside down U from the chamber to the pump. The apex of the U is where the lug nut will be? So a check valve before this would close automatically when i fill up the U with water right?

Hi Canuck,

Forgot to mention to have it upside down..........my bad. Anyway using this will make the check valve redundant coz the plumbing is slightly higher than the pump which will keep water inside the pipe, so no need for CV.

joseph... its covered now:) wow running 2 1/3 hp sequence will probably run around 4ooo pesos a month?:)

jon... hi matey... please try to post pics. My old setup had a priming valve similar to what you described but fabricated from 2 in pvc pipes. The problem is when the flap for the check valve wouldnt close because of blockage then the pump wont hold water for priming as all water added goes back to filter. OR did i completely misunderstand your post?:)

Would a slide valve (or whatever valve it is where in you just pull it up and it opens right away) work better you think? I also though about this problem since i encounter it whenever i clean the temp pond i have my kois in right now.

Hi Longlong,

That's why I've mentioned not to use CV coz of crap getting trap or building up preventing the flap to close properly. In your case you might have to re-plumb where the water leads to your filter or maybe add a slide valve between pump and filter. Close the valve while adding water then open as soon as you turn your pump back on. Hope I make senseSmile

Re: [Koi38] Where to get priming pot?? [In reply to] Can't Post

Can I just say how grateful I am that you're in this forum Mr. Koi38???! You deserve more than a case of SMB for all your help! So if you ever come here, i'll send a a few cases over to wherever you're staying as i doubt Australian customs would permit me to bring in a case...

one more question though, from the biofilter chamber that's fully aerated, at which depth would you think it would be ok to put the intake pipe at? or should i add a small partition so that the water going into the intake won't be so bubbly? Don't really want to add another partition since that would take away from the space for the filter mats, so would it be ok as is, or is it advisable for me to put in a bleed valve as well? have any ideas on how to DIY a bleed valve if i can't find one here?

Thanks.

@longlong
P4k each pump or for both? oh well, as long as my fish are happy and healthy it's all worth it. they're already spoiled as it is since I feed them shrimp almost every night and have recently found out that they love lettuce leaves... I also throw in a small handful of silk worm pupae every other day plus whole wheat bread soaked in yakult all that on top of the staple food which my dogs absolutely go nuts over btw. Man, these fish cost more per month than my three dogs combined!!!CrazySlyCrazyCrazySly

Hi Canuck,

Just glad to help out manWink Don't worry when we go back for holiday I will definately collect my SMBTongue

I would place your intake somewhere in the middle (between floor and water level) of your filter this way you can just add elbows and adjust it to suit. But if this doesn't work you may need a bleed valve. I'll see what I can come up with BVSmile

Dude,

4k is a very conservative estimate. I am running 2 1/3 hp performance pro artesian self priming pump and my electricity bill is high. Factor in the uv and air pumps......

you can get an estimate of your monthly bill by going to the meralco site, they have a calculator, just have your wattage rating in hand.

Re: [tangigi3] electric bill [In reply to] Can't Post

tangigi3,

i was talking about the price of running the pumps itself and not the whole pond since the topic was what pump he was planning on using...

im not familiar with the draw of your artesian pumps but for sequence mine tested at 330 watts. 330 watts @ 24 hrs is 7920 watts or 8 kw per day. 8 KW @ 30 days is 240 KW. Price of electricity here in our priovince is P 6.50 so 240KW @ P 6.50 comes out to P 1560 per month per pump. Running two pumps comes out a little bit over 3k.

The sequence 1/3 draws about 60 watts more so should come out to approx 4K...

Hi Long,

I think electricity is more expensive here. when I used the meralco site, 330w comes out to approx 2,300 peso per month. oh well, life is short and we enjoy our fishes.Smile

Re: [longlong] electric bill [In reply to] Can't Post

hey long,

in the "your montly bill amount", just type in an imaginary number like 10,000.

choose "other general appliances" in the dropdown "type of appliance"

type in wattage, no# of hours and day...

I just close my eyes when the amount comes out and think of happy thoughts. haha!
