Hi Mike, Re koi import ban to the Philippines,Thailand and Indonesia,I believe the authorities have for some reason, acted without checking the true facts about KHV.When some thing is banned it can be because of vested interests that would benifit by a ban.Could this be a possiblity with a KHV ban ? In the UK there is much discussion with all interested parties and believe me if there was a risk of KHV in Nishikigoi,at best or worst depending on which "side" you were on,there would only be a ban on imports in the areas in Japan where KHV had been proved in magoi, not a total ban from all Japan. The relevant authorities in the UK are in contact with Japanese fisheries depts and my latest information is that there is unlikely to be a ban on any Nishikigoi imports to the UK. When I was in Japan, visiting Niigata and Isawa,in February, many breeders we visited had taken precautions such as walking through disinfectant bowls and washing our hands before entering premises. All the koi I selected were in perfect health, and some of the tosai were in 20c and had been for many weeks, this is a temperature that would have activated KHV Its is interesting that KHV is present in several countries and my guess is that only recently have been diagnosed due to the diagnostic tests that have been developed to establish this virus is present. Certainly my Japanese friend keeps me well informed and the last koi I received at the end of June were in perfect health.
Lets hope that this ban is only temporary for the Philippines as I am sure that the risk is so small providing that koi come from non KHV areas so that all "koi-kichi" hobbyists can be happy ! Dave
