Hi Atty. I don't really know a lot about rain water, but, I think it has no minerals or value at all. meaning it is very neutral...I might be wrong so help me here, guys. some say that our rain is very acidic. Which may cause a PH crash so it helps to have some oyster shells in your filter system to kick in when time like this occurs. but going on back to the nitrate topic. Rain will surely dilute the nitrate, is it good or bad? I don't really know. What you really need is an established ecosystem in your pond. A fully grown colony of good bacteria. Remember Nitrate is an end product of the nitrogen cycle.....this is the cycle: Ammonia ----> Nitrite ----> Nitrate. Remember: Kois are voracious eaters. they are pigs. They constantly piss, sweat and poop....NON STOP........ they are swimming ammonia factories. Atty? is your pond overstocked? This might also be a big contributor to your persistent nitrate problem even with the 20% water change every other day. remember.....kois are ammonia factory Why don't you try building a trickle tower..it is easy and cheap...you just have to be patient for it to kick in. do a research on the forums here about trickle tower.
