I also buy my food from koi's n ponds. I buy the tomigai large pellets and the 2 new kois have no problem with it.
remember its the LARGE size not the medium. they have big mouths, I guess :)

at first I have to feed my kois with the large pellets mixed with hikari pellets (small) but not anymore. everybody eats the LARGE pellets.

Thanks for your support mikoi & aragorn!
Mikoi…. Aragorn is right its best that you take
photos of your koi to monitor their development.
This is also a good exercise in improving ones eye in koi,
esp for showas,,,,,showa is one of the hardest to predict.
Maybe this is also the reason why in the 36 years of staging
the All Japan Shinkokai Koi show there are only 2 grand champion showas,
one in 1991 (the inazuma kato showa) & the latest 2005 maruyama showa champ
txt me if you guys are dropping by coz im not in kOis & pOnds all the time
so I could also meet you two in person, I hope that Tom assisted you well last time
These are some of the kois Tom & I bred.
Spawned last nov 2004.
2 tanchos, 2 maruten kohakus, 1 kuchibeni kohaku, 2 koromos
all sold to a koilector named Dennis.

I go every sunday to your store in cartimar. I have been once in QC and I can only dare go there on a sunday, since traffic is bad where im coming from.
I love your store in QC, lots of koi's but not a lot in cartimar, I hope that will change soon * snicker*

I wonder how much those kois went for in the picture.
and Mr. Mike what is a MARUTEN, I have heard this term a lot but dont know what it means?

I would like to meet you in person too, and you have to pick a koi for me when your new shipment arrives.

I only see you on tv, on animal X hehehehe
please let us know when and what kind of kois are arriving.

my personal preference is ALL....hehehe I would like to have the 4 most important variety. kohaku, sanke, showa and the utsuri.

I think so, with our Phil. ph I don’t see much difficulty in sumi, hi is our concern,
You have a ki matsuba anyway so developing this koi’s color should be easier,
You might want to put a TPR (TANGENTIAL POND RETURN) on your pond to create current,
this will aid in the development of your kois ozutsu (tail joint).
Thanks mike ! keep in touch

We try to have similar varieties in both display outlets of kOis & pOnds
But since the QC branch has more space, we decided to put the storage area beside the koi lounge.
Mike what is a MARUTEN, I have heard this term a lot but dont know what it means?
It’s an ohmoyo(step) pattern with the first marking being round,
In other words it’s a tancho with additional markings in the body,
It could be a nidan maruten, sandan maruten, etc
I would like to meet you in person too, and you have to pick a koi for me when your new shipment arrives.
The pleasure is mine Mike, no prob even Tom could choose koi for you.
You mean when we harvest soon, wish me luck that the next mudpond harvest (ike age) is as good as this or better
I only see you on tv, on animal X hehehehe
Thank you mike for watching our show, We are rating 3rd on that time slot,
next to ch7’s Eat Bulaga and ch2’s Game ka na ba? & Wowowie.
Eat bulaga is a tough act to follow 25 yrs on air!
please let us know when and what kind of kois are arriving.
Will let you know mike on our next mudpond harvest, as I’ve mentioned,
we quarantine our newly harvested kois in our concrete ponds before we offer them to KOiLEKTORS
my personal preference is ALL....hehehe
I would like to have the 4 most important variety. kohaku, sanke, showa and the utsuri.

LONG POND [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Mike,

Joey here, friend of Aragon.

I don't know if I posed my question in the correct thread but thought the best way to catch you is to post a reply to your existing one.

The longest pond I did was 15mtrs (50ft) x 1.5mtrs (5fts 15mtrs (50ft) x 1.5mtrs (5ft). But I will be designing an extra long pond: length 25mtrs (about 83 ft) x 2mtrs (6.6 ft). May I ask for A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIEND?

BOTTOM DRAINS: I installed three 4" bottom drains for the 15mtrs pond. How many 4" drains must I install for this 25mtrs pond? Would three be enough to suck in a the waste 20+ ft. away or should I put more?

SURFACE SKIMMER: I usually install a separate 2000 gals/hrs pump to run the skimmer. Will the same pump be sufficient to suck the surface scum 40+ ft. away or should I install more? I also have to consider that though most pond owners are willing to invest half a million pesos for the pond, their wives cry when the electric bills shoots up.

POND DEPTH ISSUE:

I noticed that kois are friendlier in shallow ponds (.75mtrs to 1.2mtrs) than in deep ponds (1.8mtrs to 2.4mtrs). This could probably due to the fact that kois in deeper ponds seem to enjoy a world of their own instead of inter-acting with their masters. Is my theory correct.

I usually bring clients to existing koi ponds (deep & shallow) before finalizing my plan. Aside from their concern for the safety of their small kids, all of them (Chinese) chose to have shallow ponds. So most of the ponds I design do not exceed a maximum of 1mtr. Is this detrimental to the kois in any sense?

Thanks again for your never tiring help!

jtlee

PS. I should re-design my forum icon. The existing one is my name card which I design only a week ago upon your suggestion <:)(((<<

Hi joey
Your 25mtrs x 2mtrs x 1.5mtrs amounts to a 75 ton-pond or 19,841 US gallon-pond.
Should you want to have a once per hour turn over,
you will need……

a pump with a rating of 20,000 gal/hr (one single system),
or two pumps with a rating of 10,000gal/hr ( two parallel systems),
or four pumps with a rating of 5,000 gal/hr. (four parallel systems).

Now if you choose to use the “four systems of independent parallel filters with 1 pump (5000 gal/hr) each ”;
in driving one of the four systems you would need two four inch bottom drains and one 4-inch skimmer as filter feed.

So it follows that should you opt to use the “one single system” to turn over your 75ton pond once an hour you would be needing eight 4-inch bottom drains and four 4-inch skimmers. Anything lesser than these pipes will starve your filter of pond water.

And it also follows that should you opt to use the “two parallel system” you would be needing four 4-inch bottom drains and two skimmers to run one of the two parallel filters. Again anything lesser than these pipes will also starve your filter chambers of pond water.

I use the series 1000 PVC orange pipes.
You also want to use the same brand of PVC fittings (i.e. elbows and ts)
with the PVC pipes for a snug fit connection thereby avoiding leaks.

I also have to consider that though most pond owners are willing to invest half a million pesos for the pond,
their wives cry when the electric bills shoots up.

6100SEQ23 HV pumps 6,100gal/hr @ 1/3 Hp or 249 watts
5100SEQ22 HV pumps 5,100gal/hr @ ¼ Hp or 187 watts
Takara TP 140 pumps 8,466gal/hr @ .228 Hp or 170watts

I noticed that kois are friendlier in shallow ponds (.75mtrs to 1.2mtrs) than in deep ponds (1.8mtrs to 2.4mtrs). This could probably due to the fact that kois in deeper ponds seem to enjoy a world of their own instead of inter-acting with their masters. Is my theory correct.
So most of the ponds I design do not exceed a maximum of 1mtr.
Is this detrimental to the kois in any sense?

I think kois need a variety of pond depth.
That is why I strongly recommend a deep portion ( 1.5 mtrs to 3 mtrs deep)
and a shallow portion ( which will serve as a feeding and viewing area) in one’s pond.

Deeper ponds with TPRs (tangential pond return) strengthens and gives more volume to your koi’s ozutsu ( tail tube).
And conformation counts a lot in koi quality.

Thanks again for your never tiring help
You’re welcome Joey.
I’ll call you up within this week for more details regarding your filter design.
I could expound on this better over the phone.
Enjoy koi,

Michael

Re: [dreamkoi] LONG POND [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your valuable information and advice. I will sure take them into consideration.

BOTTOM DRAINS & SKIMMERS:

Hahah! The owner changed his mind and opted for a smaller pond... maybe 10,000 gallons. Thus, with a pump capacity of 10,000 gph, it should need four 4" drains and two skimmers. Right?

Does this mean that if I do not install a surface skimmer, I should install six 4" drains?

POND DEPTH:

Your multi-depth suggestion is great.
Now I have to figure a way to properly lay it out. The owner has very yound kids and would not want a fence around it for aesthetic reasons.

I plan to put the deepest portion on both sides and the shallow portion in front for feeding and viewing. If the kids fall, they will be at the shallow portion :-)

I would appreciate it very much if you open the attachment and share your thoughts.

Thanks a lot!

ULCERS [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Mike and all koi experts,

Here I am again!

My 20" Hi Utsuri, scraped hs skin off on the side of a plastic stool of a temporary pond that supports the filter tank. The exposed skin near the neck (if kois have necks) is whitish. I thought it would heal by itself. More than a month later, I noticed that some reddish spot also appeared on the side. So I put him in a 70 gallons quarantine tank and applied the following medicine. (Please see the attached pix).

1st & 2nd weeks - FURUSAN & .2% SALT - no improvement
3rd & 4th weeks - Tetracycline, Methelyn Blue & .3% salt - no improvement
5th & 6th weeks - Tetra Formaldehyde & Malachite Green & Dimilin & Tetra Medicated food - The wound near the neck seem to improve because it turned white. But the tip of the second wound seemed to develop an ulcer.

What seem to be the problem? Can you recommend anything to save him?

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.
