In the mid 90s, many people do keep kois in FGT in apartments... the popularity at that time was wild. When there is a shipment arriving from Japan, people will jam packed the farm at night waiting for the trucks to arrive. The moment the stock were unloaded, people fight to see the fish through plastic bags and start buying. FGT making was a good business. Those were the days.... Somehow, the excitement died ... Several reasons were cited : the rise of the LouHan (and now the arowanas) in Apartments (all of a sudden, makers of galss fish tanks were getting orders and couldn't meet demands...) and the limitation of the FGTs to keep koi soon became apparent to many. Honestly, this hobby cannot keep still.... you need to be challenged to continue to grow your skills, improve the standard and the quality of the kois and sooner then later, you will find that your small 12 inch kois will not satisfy you... also, if you buy good kois, they are not allowed to grow to their full potential and it would be a waste. If you don't buy good kois and keep the hobby at the same level it is ... the hobby will not last long. The magazine you read from Japan to Uk to US, all illustrate huge big and beautiful kois... and when you visit farms, you are constantly surrounded by these big and beautiful kois... It would be a matter of time you will not be happy with your FGT. There are people who continue to keep kois in FGT in apartment and maybe, some since the mid 90s... but my guess is that 90% of the people gave up the hobby or move into ponds (either they move houses or rent ponds.). At one time, there were many people renting ponds... In Nippon, there were cases, where four people shared to rent a pond. But again, that didn't last. It is never the same as having a pond at home and fishes you can relax to ... when you come home. So, that koi fever during the 90s didn't last. Don't take it from me... but History is the teacher here.. Another reason was not being able to keep up with the water maintenance and got dishearten when their expensive kois deteriorated in the over crowded FGT or pond. When I walked around Koi farms, I always saw damaged good pattern Kois. I suppose they were culled from the owners' pond. The better managed Koi hotel operators clean the filter chambers weekly. I wonder how many house pond owner does this. Mayb to avoid great disappointment and enjoy the hobby longer, we have to set realistic expectation, spend time grooming the kois we have regardless of size and do it within our means. Growing large show grade Kois is a different game, very few people can afford or have the resources to do it.
