Hi sankekoromo,

Those are insects that thrive in our filter. I cannot remember the names but it could be 'midget mosquitoes' and they are more irritation than anything else. Dimilin at 1g/ton usually takes care of the situation.

Cheers..

Its a sign that your water is not good enough. Take care of your water
and you will see these midgets flies reduced and maybe even disappear.
Good luck!

Still waiting for new TDS meter to arrive because my son broke the current one. PiratePirateNo sign of any floating shits. Water always moving result of 2 sets of 3 tier BS, each with 70kg BH. Water gushing out noisily.ShockedShocked

It is at Pasir Ris Drive 12. You should be able to see it when you are at a sharp 90 degree turn.

Hi robast,

How many applications did you put? Just put it into the pond where the pond return is. Mix well with water first before introducing. Anyway, the insect will always return once they come back and lay eggs again as Dimilin wears off.

Remember the dosage of 1g/ton.

Cheers..

i did not mix with water, i just dropped to the pond. I folowed the instruction, 1mg/ton. But stil does not work. However, since it has been raining so much, i just flushed out the excess water and aparrently i dont see the midge/insects for now. Maybe when it is all settled, it may breed again. Whats the fequency to apply the powder? once a week?

thanks bro

Hi Robast,

There is really no need to do it once a week. Just dose when it starts irritating you. Anyway, that is one of those things that are just annoying but does no harm. I think your tolerance will grow as the days go by. It is not Andes mosquitoes that causes Dengue by the way. Enjoy..

cheers..

Re: [GCSpyder] insect problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Urgent!!

GCSpyder, I still cant get rid of the midget, i have applied dimilin, in fact maybe too often. Maybe i am the only one having this problem. this getting too much to handle. My first and second filter tanks are filled with bio mat.

In fact, one of my neighbours complained to the management office saying their baby is getting mosquito bites, of course they havent seen the koi tank yet, they suspected coming from my side because of my plants and koi. However, management office havent seen my koi tanks yet, Otherwise, they would think these midgets are mosquitos and i will be asked to get rid of my koi tank (sob...sob).

Any other solution guys? please help.

I've the same problem too. Both Midgets and Dimilins couldn't help. So I clean up the whole bloody filter to get rid of them once and for all.

Re: [robast] insect problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi robast,

Dimilin is really the only solution that I know that is safe and effective but it does not seem to work on your pond. There are a number of possibilities and one that could be affecting the efficacy of dimilin in your pond is excessive organic load. I have not seen your pond but if your pond has alot of DOC (Dissolved Organic carbon), then the dimilin may not work as well.

If that is the issue, then do what Tan is saying, clean your filters. After cleaning your filters, I would do a 0.5ppm of pp treatment, but you must know the tonnage of your water well. 0.5ppm of pp in 1 ton of water equates to 0.5g, there you will only need 5g in ton of water. Do not overdose as it can kill your fish. After one day, apply the dimilin directly in the water.

The 3 step I would do, if desparate, is to clean, pp and apply dimilin. If you are not confident of pp, then clean, change water and then apply dimilin.

Cheers..

Put some goldfish into the filter chambers. I buy mine at S$2 a bag as feeder fish. They will mop up the bloodworms and reduce the flies significantly. Works for me and the goldfishes too Wink.

Re: [Carpa Diem] insect problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi CD,

Instead of goldfish, perhaps robast can also consider small fish like 'red fish' or those mosquito fish, whatever you call it. Once the authority see such fishes, they know that and moving water should not cause dengue issues. That is the advise they normally give to estate that manages ponds. The only problem I have is that those fishes always ended shredded by the pumps. CrazyBlush

cheers..

Tan,

you are right, i cleaned up my filter and flushed out all dirt from bio mat, it took me almost 4 hours to do the lot, then i put some dimilin, it solved the problem for one week, after that they are all coming back. Frustrated.
