Hi Alexina! Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, my 'koi' turned out to be mutts. After watching and waiting for them to gain some color (they were fairly small when I got them), I finally inquired to the family who gave them to me, as to whether or not there was a possibility they were mixed breed. They assured me that no, they were pure koi, as the only other fish they had in the pond was one solitary goldfish, and surely they couldn't breed. *sigh* Needless to say, they can indeed, and what I have are what so many kindly refer to as 'koimuts'. I'm still hopeful to start a pond, but, living this far north right now, I am hesitant to start a collection of koi, as the local Wal-Mart is the only one who carries them, and few tend to survive the shipping process. The ones that do survive are not likely to be nice koi, rather just the dregs sent here as a last resort. Once we're living a little further south, in Alberta, I'm sure I will be more able to find some quality fish, and get started on a pond (yard and money allowing). I'd love to keep in touch. We'll be moving to the Edmonton area, so we could very easily trade tips on dealing with the winter weather and pond challenges it brings. I'm hoping once I'm in Ed, I'll be able to find someone looking to get rid of a koi or two. I'd love to start with bigger fish. These little guys, while they are hearty and easy to care for, are boring! They basically look like minnows. I think I will be looking for new homes for them before the move. Not out of disinterest, but rather concern that the long trek, after being so established in their tank, would be the end of them.
