Help with winter freeze Can't Post

With winter coming soon I need some advice. I have a 3 ft deep pond 7 ft x 13ft.I have flat stone that hangs over the pond. I used a small whole heater last year but with the rest of the top froze and thawing and the ice slab rose, I had all the flat stone move and get all screwed up. I quick created them in place now but I am still afraid of the ice here in Chicago area. Do you thing a air pump and a bubbler would keep the top from freezing? Any suggestions would be great.

Re: [mrfixer] Help with winter freeze [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I am also looking for some info on winter care. We just put had a pond built in May. Our 5 Koi or someone gave birth to about 12-17 babies. They are growing quite well and we love our pond. We do have algae and we are concerned about what will happen to the algae over the winter. Will it die off and cause a problem in the spring? Should we use something to kill it off now? Our guy that built the pond never really gives us a straight answer. We plan to put in an aerator pump over the winter and shut the waterfall off. The pond is about 19" deep. Hopefully someone will give us a reply!
Thanks!

The algae will definately die out because of the cold. In fact if it hasn't already I would be very suprised.
