Koi keeping indoors Can't Post

Hi, I'm in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. My pond is not deep enough to overwinter my 5 Koi which are about 6" long. I must bring them indoors and very soon
as the fall begins to creep upon us. My dilema is finding a suitable container which isn't glass. I have a smal aquarium that is glass but it is only about 20 gal. My local pet store suggested a plastic barrel that would be 40-50 gals (with appropriate filter/air etc). Does anyone have any ideas of what kind of container I might use. One person suggested a feeding trough from a farm supply store. I've checked with Rona and Home Depot but they don't have something that is 3' deep that is useful. I don't want to put them into a wheeled garbage can (plastic) but that may be what it comes to. Any suggestons on container type that an old Grandma can cart to the basement gratefully received. Thanks again. VDavies.

I have a friend who uses a galvanized cattle watering trough as a Qtank. It is about 5-6' long 2' wide and 2 1/2-3' deep. Smaller sizes should be available at a local livestock feed store if that is too large. They are also available in Plastic/fiberglass which is lighter weight. (might be too heavy for an "old Grandma", but not so bad with the help of some young, strong, grandkidsWink)

Hey: You are gonna love having an indoor pond for your koi. A couple of years ago I bought an 80 gal. plastic prefabed tub, put stone around part of it, bought stone cloth for the rest. I had my koi, two baby turtles, a frog all living happily through the winter inside together. I had to feed the turtle and frog crickets and blood worms. It was a lot of work but I loved it. My home burnt down three years ago and lost them. We rebuilt and as much as I'd like to do it again, probably won't. I have a large pond outside that is 3 1/2 feet deep. I tease my family that the soft tub whirl pool looks like a good inside koi tank to me! Good luck with your koi on inside. You'll love it and learn a lot!! judy

Once I tried too hard to control things in the pond....the frogs left.
