Green Stuff Can't Post

Hi all, Im new here.

Ive got a problem with a green algae that when u try to net it out and from round the sides it just disintegrates, my parents suggested using a stick or a cane to wrap it round and pull it out, but the algae/weed is not strong enough to stay in one piece.

My pool size is 11ft x 18ft x 4ft depth (average), located in County Durham, North East UK

I run a Green genie 48000 filter and a Otter Maximus 9000 pump, the pool is nearly 12 months old.

the water is crystal clear and the small koi (3-4inches) seem quite happy.

some people have said it could be the rain or the amount of sunlight on the pool.

if you require more info just ask and ill post it.... thanx

Re: [Toneh] Green Stuff [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm having a bit of a problem with this too. What I'm finding is that if i use a net with a quite fine holes, the algae sort of piles up and doesnt fall through. The other net I have which is more of a normal one just lets it all through. So I guess give that a shot. Another idea would be to stop feeding, I think - Then, when you remove the algae you're actually taking the nitrates OUT of the cycle and not replacing them with feeding. THe fish themselves will be like "right, we'll have to eat algae" and help clear up. Just remove it everyday.

Best of luck i guessUnsure

This green stuff is a nightmare, I can manage to get most of it out with a fine net. I have to do this every 3 days to keep on top of it.

The fish DO seem to be eating it, as they have always got their heads around the sides and on the bottom, but judging by the size of the pool the 17 koi and 9 golden orfe have a hell of a job attempting to eat the lot !!

Usually after ive been 'netting' for about 30mins the fish seem to go mad looking for food in what i have stirred up.

Hopefully when the lillys start to grow and cover some of the pool my problem wont be as bad. Ill just keep netting regular to keep on top of it.

Hi Toneh,

Having too much sunlight will coz green algea. Do you have a UV light, this will help. But even better if you install a trickle tower or shower. Plus your pond filter is not fully establish yet. Once your pond/filter has matured you will have carpet algea on the walls which is good for your fish and thousands of good bacteria in your filter and should help or even prevent this problems of your.Smile Patience my friend, we soon get thereWink

Keep us posted.

Jon

Hi Jon,

Yeah Ive seen the carpet algae, mum has it on her pool, which is about 18years old now. The filter i have has 2 UV lights fitted in the lid, the water is crystal clear so i guess they are doing there job, as for the sunlight, the pool gets sun from first thing in the morning till about 3-4 in the afternoon.
There are three 2" outlets on the filter, 2 of them are direct 2" flexi pipe straight to the pool edge and the other outlet controls a 3 tier waterfall. I dont know if this is what you mean by a trickle tower or shower.

I have a small pump powering a small ornament which fires water about 2ft across the pools surface, but like you said the filter and pool hasnt matured yet, and NO cover atall, until my lillys get a move on.

I am considering using a fine net to cover half of the pool to help for now, would this work?

Hi Toneh,

Any shade kind of shade will help.Smile

A trickle tower is different from what you've describe.

Here are some pix just to give you an idea. This is from Koiguyoz guy. He used this drum for his Trickle tower
[inline greenTT.jpg]

And if you have alok in this link. This roughtly what's inside. You can use bioballs or larva rocks.
