I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!! Can't Post

I do hope someone can help, my husband put in quite a large koi pool about 16 years ago, (7000 Gal), unfortunately I lost my husband at the end of last year so took on the job of looking after the fish, I was a complete beginner as my husband had looked after everything. I managed to get through this summer ok, cleaning filters, doing water changes etc, then about the middle of September two of the fish began to not look well and a couple of weeks later one was dead. I took it to my local aquatics centre they said it had a bacterial infection and sold me a treatment to put in the water, can't remember what it was called. Had to put in two lots, 7 days apart. The other unwell fish improved and I thought he was going to be ok and he started feeding again. Then the temperature dropped, he stopped feeding and now is lying in the water upside down with his head hanging down so I think there is something wrong with his swim bladder. The aquatics cente said there was no cure, but every so often he swims round the pool normally.

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to get him better, has anyone tried anything that has helped, or would it be kinder to take him out of the water, is he suffering? How do you humanely kill a fish? I don't want to do this if there is any chance of finding a cure. The rest of the fish look ok, but none of them are feeding, haven't fed very well all summer but look healthy, started to give them wheatgerm, but have stopped feeding them altogether now as they were not interested. I am currently adding salt to the water each day.

Can anyone help please?

Sorry this is so long, not only am I new to fish keeping but new to the internet as well.

Jill

where are you in the UK - you need somebody to have a look and advise. Do you know any good local koi dealers or club members?

Dear jill.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

It's never easy starting something from scratch, and a 7000 gallon set up is quite a handful. I would suggest you start by reading as much as you can get your hands on on the subject. Do not panic...

First stop adding salt to the pond and try and do a few water changes as salt dose not disipate in water you can only dilute it and and you should not go above 0.03 %. Unless you use it for short term bath treatments.

Unfortunatley your fish may have some internal scaring of the swim bladder, this can occure becouse of physical injury or simply fighting off an infection. But even with major surgery cannot be corrected.
Furtunatley many fish live very long and happy lives with these problems.

I had a fish for many years that i called Wobbly becouse of his condition. Although he looked quite odd he was very tame and grew very big reproduced several generations of big healthy chargoi without his condition ever being repeated to his offspring.

Anyway start with the basics like water quality filteration 20% water changes once a month test kits for the water quality filter maintance pump checks.

And see about joining koi clubs in your area. And keep in touch with us here. We may all differ on opinoins as they are like bums (everyone has one.) but if we can help we try.

Re: [zoul] I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Zoul

Thank you for your helpful reply, but I am sorry to tell you that my fish died two days ago, I was really upset, he was a lovely fish. I weighed and measured him after I took him out of the water, he was 23" long and weighed just over 7lbs he was silver with red and black markings.

I have read my husbands books, found it difficult to apply descriptions of diseases to my fish, could only come up with swim bladder problems, which you say does not usually kill them, so I hope it wasn't something else.

The other bad news is that I have just finished adding 25kg of salt to the water, this was on the advice of my local acquatics centre, so I don't know if this will have made matters worse. The rest of fish seem to be in good health, but they all stopped feeding about 3 weeks ago, the water temperature is around 9 degrees. They haven't fed well all summer. I had a water test done about 2 weeks ago, everything was ok. Not sure about doing water changes now, as it will soon be time to shut everything down for the winter, I know my husband didn't do water changes in the winter.

Another question, when should I close the bottom drains? Would really like to shut the pond down now for the winter but will keep the pump running.

I had one other reply from Martin but don't think my reply to him was posted, not even sure I am doing this reply to you properly, this is the first time I have ever been on any forum and have found it hard to find my way around.

Thank you again.

Jill
