Water Quality Can't Post

HI,
CAN ANYBODY HELP ME? I AM A NOVICE WHO IS HAVING SLEEPLESS NIGHTS WORRYING. i HAVE RECENLTY BUILT A KOI POND (3500 GALLON) 22 FOOY LONF X 7FT WIDE AND 4 FT DEEP.AQUAMAX 8000 PUMP AND A OASE BIOTEC 18 FILTER WITH UV. tHE POND AS BEEN UP AND RUNNING NOW FOR ABOUT 8 WEEKS BUT THE WATER QUALITY SEEMS TO BE GOING DOWNHILL. FOR THE FIRST 4 WEEKS IT WAS CRYSTAL CLEAR BUT NOW SEEMS A LITTLE CLOUDY WITH LOTS OF SMALL PARTICLES FLOATING MIDWATER. i DONT KNOW IF I AM BEING TOO FUSSY OR NOT,I CAN SEE THE BOTTOM OF THE POND STILL BUT KNOW IT IS NOT AS CLEAN AS IT WAS. I HAVE DONE NOTHING NEW APART FROM RAISING THE OUTLET PIPE FROM MY FILTER AS THE BIOTEC 18 FILTER BOX WAS ONLY HALF FULL SO THOUGHT IF I RAISED THE OUTLET PIPE THEN WOULD GET TO USE MORE OF THE FOAM FILTERS INSIDE, I ALSO CHANGED THE ANGLE OF MY OUTLET PIPE SO THAT IT RAN INTO THE POND AT 45 DEG ANGLE AND NOT STRAIGHT DOWN. COULD THIS BE IT?? HELP HELP HELP PLEASE

Your mechanical filtration is inadequate so improving that is necessary.

Thanks for the reply but i do not think that is the problem as i have seen the filter used on a friends pond twice the size and that was crystal clear. I only have 12 small koi about 4 inch . Oase state this filter is capable of 3 times the size of my pond with maximum fish stock. Thanks for the advice.

The thing is if you are having particle problems, it is because it's not being filtered out mechanically. A possible solution is for you to add clay to your pond. This basically clumps small particles together making it easier for the filter to trap them.

You might also want to try buying some quilt batting (available at hobbycraft) which is very fine and may help solve your problem.

Oh i see. Sorry! At the weekend i put some fine foam sheets into the filter and this seems to be working now,the pond is much more clearer although i now have a problem with one of my koi. It has a clouded eye??and a small graze beneath the eye? The local koi shop gave me 25kg of salt to put into the pond and also a 5 day treatment of Interpet anti fungas and bacteria to use. Hope this is correct but just following there advice. Do you not think the Oase Biotec 18 filter is any good then?? It was recommended to me. Thanks

Putting salt into the pond at this time of year (ie just before winter) is quite a bad idea and most koi keepers who salt their ponds have been doing regular water changes to get rid of the salt. If I were you I wouldn't.

Although this forum can be helpful, a better forum for you would be this place:

Its a UK-based koi carp forum with some extremely knowledgable people, including koi dealers and vets who specialise in koi. They'll be able to help you out with literally ANY question you have.

Hope to see you over there!
